Max Yospe Obituary

Max Yospe 1924 ~ 2007 Max Yospe was born July 25, 1924 in Chicago to Russian Jewish parents, Isadore and Esther Merle Goldman Yospe. He died January 26, 2007 surrounded by his family. Max served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II (Military Police) stationed in Tooele where he met and fell in love with Elaine Gillespie. They were married January 11, 1946; and later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. Max joined the Tooele Police and served as Assistant Chief. Four and a half years later, he joined the Salt Lake City Police Dept. where he spent 33 years in numerous divisions including many years counseling troubled youth. He established the Chaplain Corps for the SLC Police and SL Co. Sheriff Depts, heading that office for 17 years. He had a strong desire to further his education and earned a Bachelors degree in sociology from Westminster College. He was a popular public speaker and an accomplished landscape artist. Max was the first LDS Bishop of Jewish descent and served as bishop of the Cannon 4th Ward for eight years. He had a firm testimony of the Savior and served Him faithfully. Max was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Many happy times were spent at the family cabin in Island Park, Idaho with family and friends. Max is survived by his wife, Elaine; and three children, Sue Ann (Wayne) Ricks, Clark (Emma) Yospe, Lorraine (Graham) Starkie,; also 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchil-dren who will miss him dearly. Preceded in death by parents, brother (Nathan), and two grandchildren. Funeral service Tuesday, January 30, 2007, 11 a.m. at East Millcreek 2nd Ward chapel, 3750 S. Hillside (2500 E) Holladay, Utah. Friends may call for viewing Monday, Jan. 29th from 6-8 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Dr, SLC; or prior to services 9:45-10:45 a.m. at the ward chapel. The family extends their deepest thanks to VA Nursing Home staff and Silverado Hospice for their kind and loving care.

Dear Elaine,
Our daughter is visiting in Utah and called us last night to say that she had seen a story on the news about Max's passing. We are so sorry to hear about your loss. He was such a kind and great friend to my dad, and I know that my mother regarded you as one of her dearest friends. Dear Yospe Family,

It was an honor and a privilege to know and to serve with Max on the SLC PD. He was always kind and willing to listen or help you in any way he could. Being the Police Chaplin I asked Max to conduct and coordinate the funeral for my father in 1981, although not knowing me that well at that time, he still gladly agreed making the service wonderful and memorable. Max also provided me at the service with a book of comforting stories/thoughts which I cherish and use often reminding me of what a wonderful person Max is. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.

Dear sweet Max, a beacon of love and dedication and a family to be admired and respected. I know there is a loss in your hearts today, but the direction and devotion he taught, will overcome and set aside the hurt, in an overwhelming show of love and gratitude from the thousands of lives he touched.
