Jimmy Crum Obituary

Jimmy Crum, Columbus' "Dean of Sports," died Jan. 5, 2009 at age 80.

The local TV legend, who spent more than 40 years as a sportscaster for WCMH-TV (Channel 4), was born Oct. 21, 1928, as James W. Crum, but was known to everyone as "Jimmy."

Crum was known for his flashy sport coats and quick smile, and had covered dozens of local and national sports figures, including boxer James "Buster" Douglas, and such Ohio State football figures as Woody Hayes, Archie Griffin and Art Schlichter.

He also worked for a time as a TV voice for play-by-play of OSU men's basketball and hosted former Coach Fred Taylor's show.

Crum joined WCMH in 1949 and retired in 1994, working for many years as the TV station's sports director.

But despite Crum's many years on the TV screen, he was perhaps better known for his work as a philanthropist. In 1993, a Channel 4 spokesperson estimated that Crum had been responsible for raising more than $23 million for charity.

In 2004, Crum was awarded the Silver Circle Award by the Ohio Valley chapter of the National Television Academy, which is given to those who have excelled in broadcasting for at least 25 years. He was inducted into the Ohio Associated Press Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2002.

Crum was preceded in death by his wife, Miriam, in 2005. He is survived by son James Crum and daughter Kelly Delaveris, a local jazz singer. Full story

A'Legend', few earn the right to be considered one, but Mr. Crum did , not only in his profession, but in his life. As a person period. I had the good fortune to sit with him twice when he came to do our little sports talk show with us.I looked at someone that to me was just larger than life.He looked at us as if we were equals. The measure of a good and humble man.God bless Jimmy Crum and his family.

Jimmy Crum is truly a legend in Columbus as illustrated here by the outpouring of people whose lives were better just knowing Jimmy or even watching him on TV. He meant a lot to my sister & my family. Ever since we met him in 1983 when my sister was the Easter Seals Poster Child, he has symbolized hope & happiness. While this is a sad time for all who knew him, it's even more the celebration of a wonderful man who truly loved life.

Dear Jim, Kelly, and family,
I share in your sorrow. Your Dad is a treasure that we all shared while he was here. I share in your sorrow, and I will pray that God will give you peace and comfort that you never dreamed possible. If everyone would live life as your dad did, this world would be such a better place! He leaves a wonderful legacy of love and respect for life that will live on. He lives on thru all that he is, and all that he has done for all of us.
In Christian love,

Jimmy Crum was a GREAT MAN. As a child of 8/9, I watched him on TV doing the play by play of the Ohio State Basket Ball games, I never missed a game. He made them so special for me, and everyone else. His "we got a barn burner tonight" and his way of explaining the game made me an avid fan then and now.

His work with the charities was par none, no one did more for the kids then he did in Columbus.

Mr. Crum will always be remembered by me, with love and laughter. He was a very important part of my early years, Buckeye Basket Ball. He will be sadly missed by all.

God Bless your Father, he was more than just a sports news caster, he was an institution.

I remember back in the spring of 1993. My husband and I were at OSU baseball field watching Hebron Lakewood playing for the State High School Baseball Championship. It was a close game a very close game. I said out loud "We have a barn burner this afternoon. One person said were is Jimmy Crum. As the final inning was over and Hebron Lakewood won the game I looked at my husband as said "How about that sports fans".
I know that he is with our Lord talking the Lord's ear off about OSU Basketball.

Growing up in Columbus in the 60's & 70's, I enjoyed thoroughly listening to & watching Mr. Crum during his sports segments on Channel 4 & his Ohio State basketball telecasts. His was & is the standard I still use to this day to compare sportscasters over the years & to this day. We have lost a Giant!
Mr Crum, you were the absolute best!

Hello to the Crum Family -

I thought the world of Jimmy Crum. Not only was he accomplished in his field, but also he was a true giver, and for that I will remember him most dearly.

Jimmy and my mother, Bette Shuman, shared a birthday - October 21, 1928. They were acquaintances who, once they discovered that they were born on the very same day of the same year, always managed to somehow contact one another just to say "Happy Birthday" each October. My mother passed away in 1992, so every year since then, I have phoned Jimmy to wish him that special "Happy Birthday," on behalf of my mother, and also from me.

About a year ago, my mother-in-law was considering moving into the Forum, and I knew that Jimmy lived there, so I called him to find out if he was happy there and to ask a few questions about The Forum. He was accommodating, kind, and generous with his time, answering my inquiries and telling me how happy he was living to be living there.

This town will miss our favorite sportscaster. And the world will miss a man who was truly dedicated to helping others through his philanthropy, cheering them with his hearty laugh and genuine, bright smile, and making life more meaningful for all who knew him.

To the Crum family - I am so sorry for your tremendous loss. I know how much he loved you all, and how dear you were to him.

And those of us who passed briefly through his life were blessed to have had that honor.

To The Crum Family,
Jimmiy has joined the Angels in Heaven. I lost my Mom on Christmas Eve so I know what grief this is to lose a loved one. I met Jimmy 23 years ago at Childrens Hospital while my grandson was a patient there. He made my grandson's stay a much easier one by visiting with him. Jimmy will be missed by everyone. He was such a wonderful person. Again my sympathy goes out to the family.

Well, "How about That!!" Jimmy Crum led a "Barn Burner" of a life. I can still hear one of my buddies from Junior High calling out "How about That!" every time he made a big jump shot......some people move through life incognito. Not Jimmy Crum! What kind of man lives a life where hundreds from all over the country feel the need to comment when he moves on? We all know, That's why we are here on this web page. A man like Jimmy Crum.........

The Fankhauser family has many wonderful memories of Jimmy. For many years as a sports fan he was "The Dean". For many more years we observed the friendship between Jimmy and our daughter Mollie. You see Jimmy presented Mollie with her very first golf trophy at a local tournament in 1986. She was five and he was a softie. Today, as a member of the LPGA Tour she still speaks oten and fondly of Jimmy. We all regret the passing of this very special man and will long remember the good he brought to so many lives.

Kelly and Jim,

I am so sorry for your loss and the loss of a wonderful man. I knew Jimmy for over 30 years and worked with him on the Easter Seal telethon. He spent many hours at Easter Seals and always had an ice cream party for the children every year. Whenever I called him he was always available for the children and participated as master of ceremonies for the many graduations. He will be sorely missed by so many people and will always hold a special place in my heart. Jimmy has made me a better person through his selfless giving to everyone he touched, met or worked with. God bless him and keep him safe.

Buckeye fans everywhere will sorely miss Jimmy Crum! I'm extremely saddened to hear about his passing! As a 1971 Basketball Buckeye, one of the many characteristics that impressed me about Jimmy was that regardless of your status on the team, Jimmy knew EVERY PLAYER'S name, their hometown, their high school coach and specifics about their family and he asked about them every time they met. He was a remarkable, talented and caring man. Columbus, Ohio and I are better for having known Jimmy Crum!

To the Crum Family,
I remember Jimmy from my childhood, in the 50's, on Channel 4. About 20 years ago, he came to my childrens' grade school (Prairie Lincoln Elementary) and hosted an awards program for the kids. One of the children wore a bright colored jacket, similar to Jimmys'. The little boy got on stage with Jimmy. Jimmy loved it. Jimmy went on and on with this young man. It was really neat to see how much he enjoyed the little boy dressing like him. It really showed then that he was a great guy, all about the little boy, not about himself. He had everyone laughing, what an entertainer. Recreation Unlimited also showed that he was a truly caring person. He will be remembered as a legend and will be sadly missed by all.

We will miss Jimmy. My daughter and I first met Jimmy at the Easter Seals Telethon many years ago. We were on with my daughter who was very young and has Cerebral Palsy. She was taking speech therapy at Easter Seals. They invited us to be interviewed by Jimmy. We were delighted to meet such a warm and delightful man. My daughter is 21 now and we have spent most of those years with Jimmy at fundraisers for Recreation Unlimited. My daughter and I will miss seeing Jimmy at the camp and fundraisers. We felt very close to him.

Our thoughts and prayers go to Jimmy's family. I was grateful that he brought his daughter Kelly to the Forum so my mother could hear her sing before she passed away over a year ago. We love you Jimmy.

I was first introduced to Jimmy by my Dad. Then several years later went to work (1950'S) while in college for TV4. Such fun times those were..he showed me how to run the switchboard. One day, when I had just started, Ruth Lyons had been pre-empted and it was erupting. I was in a panic..and he gallantly rode to my rescue.
I have had the pleasure to run into him over the years. The last time, was this spring, at the birthday celebration of LaVerne Hill, Charlie's widow. We sat and chatted about old times at the station..and we held hands!!!
Such a legend..but more than that, such a wonderful, human being.
God just needed him a little early..
God Bless you, sir...a life well lived.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Over the years I would run into him in one or another of the many restaurants in which I worked over 25 years, and he NEVER forgot me. He'd give me a hug and ask how I was. At The Worthington Inn he would come and hear Kelly, occasionally and everyone was a friend of his.

He was one of the sweetest men ever. He'll be dearly missed.

Please accept my deepest sympathy. Jimmy Crum was a sports professional; always enthusiastic, always striving for accuracy with respect and knowledge. His philanthropies made a difference in many lives.

One of Jimmy's best belly laughs I recall:

One Saturday Night in December; raining, freezing, and dreary; cars were dropping off people at the side door of The Worthington Inn; where warmth and sweet music were a tradition. (Daughter Kelly and Joe Dunlap, of course)

Among the many people on the sidewalks at High and New England were celebrities like Mr and Mrs Crum--and, Santa Claus!--

Of course, Jimmy was waving and, in that famous voice, yelling, "HI, SANTA!" Santa...from way up at High Street bellowed, "How 'bout that, Sports Fans!!"

I am lost for words about Jimmy.
Not only did I grow up watching and hearing him announce OSU basketball games but remember some of his nicknames he would use like " The Bellair Bomber ".
I also worked in just about every golf outing he had in Granville for Recreation Unlimited and also sold XMAS trees for quite a few years.
I am truly sorry

Celebrating a life well lived. We will cherish the memories forever. As many others have already stated, I grew up watching/listening to Mr. Crum. He got me interested in watching OSU Basketball because of his commentaries - my favorite line was 'How about that sports fan?' What a wonderful human being, he was truly blessed. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

I met Jimmy one time at a book signing. Always watched his sports telecast every evening. Loved the phrase he always used , HOW ABOUT THAT. What a great man he was.

To the Crum Family

We have just sent one of the best men of our community to heaven. He did everything with great passion. He had that same passion off the air with the charity work he did in Central Ohio. All of the less fortunate were more fortunate in having Jimmy in their corner rooting for them.
We're all better off having had Jimmy in our midst setting the example of paying forward with generosity of time, talent and treasure.
May God put his arms around your family during this time of great loss.

Jimmy has been called home to brighten up heaven with his colorful sportscoats. I grew up watching Jimmy Crum and feel he is an asset to this world that will be missed. May his family be comforted knowing he was a man well loved in this community.

My heart sunk when I heard this news. I can't put into words what a great person he was and how much Jimmy meant to me.

I was badly burned in 1971 and transported to Childrens Hospital in Columbus. I met Jimmy there and we immediately became friends. He visited me and other kids in the burn ward at least twice a week and sometimes brought celebrity athletes with him. It was the worse 2 months of my life but Jimmy always brought a smile to my face when he walked into my room.

After I was released he invited me to his home for dinner, the Bengals training camp, a meeting with Woody Hayes, and even to WCMH to watch him do a live broadcast. Those memories will last a lifetime.

I moved south and lost touch with Jimmy for a few years. Just last summer I wrote him a letter to let him know I was doing fine and was thinking about him. In the letter, I once again thanked him for everything he did for me and what a wonderful person I thought he was. Two weeks later I received a 3 page hand written letter from him. He said that my letter had “made his day”. That was exactly what I was thinking about his letter to me.

I’ve never met a person with a bigger heart than Jimmy Crum.

I will miss you my friend

There aren't many people I know of who can say they knew a truly great man, but we as a community sure can. Jimmy Crum was the best man I knew. Faults and all. He was a living example of how to live your life in the service of others. And I for one will spend the rest of my life trying to reach that goal, because I had the best teacher. I can't remember a time when he didn't say, "How are you doing, Ms. America?" Thank you Jimmy for teaching us all how to be better people. Godspeed, my friend, godspeed.

As a postal window clerk, I had the joy of waiting on Jimmy a few times at the station on Henderson Rd. near where he lived.
But about 15 years ago, before I became a window clerk, I bumped into him at a Wendy's restaurant. Although I ordinarily don't gravitate to celebrities, I felt compelled to approach him when I realized he was by himself and that no one else was talking to him.
I asked him his thoughts about whatever that day's hottest water cooler sports topic was.
He politely and pleasantly told me his opinion and then I left the store. As I drove off, it occurred to me that I had caused him to go nearly three minutes without a bite of his burger or sip of his beverage.. My face then turned red in a car with no one else in it.
On a subsequent trip to that Wendy's, I mentioned the incident to a couple employees and they said he ate there frequently and was used to it and was always gracious that way.
