Being a professional musician is to being a musical hobbyist as skydiving is to riding in a commercial airline. So, as I gaze timidly out the jet's passenger window, and see Brian flying by, in the rapture of his complete dedication to his life's passion, my own heart speeds up for a moment, and there, a pang of envy.

So sad to hear that Brian has passed away.
For some years I worked with Brian in a project of Sara Wookey. I enjoyed his frienship and music.
Even after years of having no contact, it is a shock to me, it must be more shocking for relatives and close friends. I wish them all strenght in carrying this loss.

Brian, I will miss you. Your interstellar musical explorations and earthy "honks, wails and moans" have touched and enriched so many of us fortunate enough to have heard, danced to and been transported by your music. Thank you for giving so freely of your talent, inspiration and unique expression. And special thank you for our Ra connection. May your clarion call with God's trombones be heard across the cosmos!

The Columbus dance community has grown and been fed by artists like Brian. I was just one of hundreds of dancers who moved to, and was moved by the sounds he produced. Please know that his memory and music will continue to echo in our hearts. He will be so missed. Bless the Casey family with the love of and comfort of God and friends.

Brian,
I know that you are melding with the Super Souls right now. Racin' with Sun Ra in a telepathic muse. No need for words, just simply being in the moment.
As I am saddened, I am so grateful for those creative sharing times with you as a part of H.W.& M., Avant Collective and other grand times of making Musical Art.
Brian gave me the freedom to express my ways of being interactive that was special from one musician to another.
I will never forget you Brian, soar on my brother.

Nick Mancini

September 12, 2008

My heartfelt condolences to all Brian's friends and family. I knew Brian as an extraordinarily gifted and creative composer and arranger, a talented multi-instrumentalist, and a kind and generous soul. He gave so much to this community, in his output as a composer and performer as well as in the encouragement and support he gave so many fellow musicians and artists in our creative endeavors. He loved music that came from the heart, and he poured his heart into everything he took on, experimental compositions and fragile folk songs, jazz, country, rock, ska, his own tunes and collaborations with others. He saw the humor in all kinds of situations, and he found the beauty in all kinds of art. I sometimes thought he felt beauty more profoundly than most of us get a chance to or allow ourselves to. It's so hard to fathom that he's passed on...I hope whoever reads this can take some comfort in the fact that he enriched so many lives with his music and with his friendship.

To the entire Casey family -

Brian was such a light to all who knew him and his love of music helped shape that love in others, including me. I learned to love Jazz with Honk, Wail and Moan and never lost my love for it. All my love, prayers and thoughts are with you at this moment of sadness and know that Brian's life will have lasting impact on me and so many others who knew him.

I am deeply sadenend to hear of Brians passing. Looking back to our days at Watterson I can truely say that Brian had an effect on all that he encountered. September 11, 2008

For whatever reason, our art has a bad habit of taking away some of our brightest talents much too soon. I reckon that at least 80% of the gigs I've done since I've lived in Columbus have included Brian in some way. I'll always treasure and miss those amused/excited glances he'd give me across the bandstand whenever I played something wholly inappropriate over one of his brand new compositions. There was a joke among us that Brian would never tell you how to play one of his tunes, even if you asked him. But his humor and sense of adventure always brought out the best in us. Brian was always the biggest fan of everyone he played with, and he loved so many kinds of music. He also knew a lot of great trombone jokes! Best wishes to his family and friends -- he was truly someone irreplaceable.

September 11, 2008

I am saddened to hear of Brian's passing. Brian will always be remembered by many as a truly creative and inspiring person. His music will live on to always remind me of the special times many of us shared watching him perform and getting together with him at OSU. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

September 11, 2008

We were shocked and deeply saddened to hear that Brian had passed. Since meeting him while we attended Watterson, I've never ceased to be amazed at his talent. Through they years we'd mostly lost touch, but I periodically got a chance to see him perform live. I'll always cherish the memory of those performances, and of his friendship so many years ago.

I haven't seen Brian in so many years. I used to love when he'd play with us in The Spectre. Always with the scarves tied to his slide like the Steven Tyler of trombone. We'd argue about the comparative merits of Mingus, Sun Ra and Ellington. He was the consumate musician, playing because he truly loved to make new sounds. His creativity and energy will be missed by so many.

Sara Wookey

September 11, 2008

Dear Casey Family,
I am deeply sorry to hear about Brian's passing. Brian and I were long time friends and artistic collaborators. We worked together in Columbus and in Germany. He also played at my wedding reception in Columbus in 2006. The memories of his laughter and his music will live on in my heart.
May you find peace in this time of loss.

Brian,
How lucky that my stupid cell phone "pants-dialed" you last week. Funny how something random can become so important. It was great to talk to you. Can't wait to see the new music you've been working on, but it will be so hard to play without you. Miss you brother. Love to your family,

My sympathy goes to the Casey family, and to all of those close to Brian.

I played in HWM and NBBB with him for years, and always appreciated his wry sense of humor in life and more importantly, in his music. He could turn a red note into a blue one. He made jazz music seem unconventionally colorful, daring, and new. And he always had a smile, gentle demeanor, and impeccable sense of humor.

I'm so sad that he's gone. Lucky for us, he left behind wonderful memories and music.

Goodbye for now, Professer KC.

My deepest sympathy goes out to the entire Casey family.
Brian was a wonderful person and a wonderful friend to me for many years. We spent so much time together in Mary Adam 12 he was my family too. His talent, warmth and beautiful smile always filled me with joy and we always shared a way of communicating that required no words- just smiles, laughter and music. The last hug I gave Brian was this year at Comfest when he came to see me in my booth where I sell hats and handbags. He was soaking wet from the rain storm and had to go play with Honk, Wail and Moan. I told him I'd give him a dry tshirt but he liked the one he was wearing b/c it said something about musicians that was cool and I told him, "Your shirt is really cool and I can see why you want to wear it, but I don't want you to freeze up there!" and he said he wanted to wear the soaking wet tshirt and did! I miss you so much and am sending you all my love Brian!

I am so sad to hear that the world has lost the talent and friendship of Brian. My husband, Rob Litchfield, played with him in Avant Collective, and my life in Columbus was filled with Brian's music and presence. Brian danced with me all night at my wedding, and one of my favorite photos from that night is the one where he is dipping me on the dancefloor. In it, he is smiling and wearing one of his trademark disco shirts. Rob and I send our thoughts to family, friends, and musicians that knew and loved Brian.
