Ronald Ravneberg Obituary

RAVNEBERG Ronald L. Ravneberg, 60, died at home Saturday, January 31, of pancreatic cancer. Born in Lewiston, Idaho, on March 25, 1948, Ron attended Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland, Ohio, and graduated from the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho, with bachelor's and master's degrees in psychology. He worked in the behavioral health industry for more than 30 years in Seattle, Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio. For the past 15 years he was a management consultant and most recently was a principal in Health Systems Consulting and TURN LLC. Ron had a lifelong interest in amateur astronomy. Since receiving his first telescope at age 9, he pursued his passion for star gazing, building and refurbishing telescopes, and forging friendships with fellow amateur astronomers. He was a longtime member and past president of the Columbus Astronomical Society. He spent countless evenings at Perkins Observatory in Delaware, Ohio, where he enjoyed spending time with friends and helping members of the public discover the wonders of the universe. He also developed close connections with astronomers throughout the world. Ron was an avid reader and book collector and worked closely with The Aldus Society, a Columbus-based organization for lovers of books and the printed arts. He was a board member, past president and newsletter editor for the group. Additionally, he was a board member for both the Friends of the OSU Libraries and The Fellowship of American Bibliophilic Societies (FABS). Over the years he built his own collection of antiquarian books, maps and prints, with a particular emphasis on works associated with 18th-century explorer Capt. James Cook. He was preceded in death by parents Lloyd and Nadine Ravneberg, sister Julie Ravneberg, father-in-law Walter Huehl and sister-in-law Judith Scholtz. He is survived by wife Janet; daughter Christina of New York City; son David of Columbus; sister Nancy (Dave) Hill of Wickenburg, Ariz.; mother-in-law Kathryn Huehl of Indianapolis; brother-in-law Robert Scholtz Jr. of Columbus, Ind.; niece Kathryn (Chad) Tolen of West Lafayette, Ind.; nephew Robert (Jennifer) Scholtz III of Richmond, Va; niece Stephanie (Jeff) Barnes of Wickenburg, Ariz.; niece Sherry (Keith) Hoene of Garden Valley, Idaho; eight great-nieces and five great-nephews. Ron will be missed by the many friends he made in Australia. A man of great erudition, an amusing raconteur and an excellent amateur astronomer. Ron was a credit to his callings, his nation and his family. He was a gentleman in the true sense of the word.

Mr. Ravneburg always purchased Boy Scout popcorn from me and told me stories about Boy Scouts. He encouraged me to get my eagle scout and told me how important it is. His family is in my prayers. Marcus Myers

Janet and Family
I had the fortune to work with Ron for the last ten years. Ron provided guidance and in-depth support to the Mental Health Consumer Outcomes Initiative over many years and can be credited with much of its success. His wisdom will be missed, but his assistance leaves us who continue on better able to follow the path. Ron, I miss you!

Jan and family, I am so very sorry for your loss. I first met Ron back in the late 1980's. Whether is was in California at Riverside Telescope Convention, Canada at Starfest, in the Florida Keys, or just sitting at some diner, Ron was always a wealth of great knowledge, stories, and friendship. He always had time and patience for people, never rushing anything. There is no question, I will always remember the good times we had, and all the help and guidance he gave me over the years.

Ron will be remembered as someone who was always upbeat and truly a joy to be around. His immense knowledge of astronomy and other subjects never ceased to amaze me. I am deeply saddend to learn of his passing and know his legacy will live on far into the future among those in the Columbus Astronomical Society.

"and helping members of the public discover the wonders of the universe." A huge understatement. A person's enthusiam in any matter of interest can be nurtured or squandered by their first contact with other interested parties. By that I would have to call Ron a Great Nurturer

Ron had an incredible gift for forming instant friendships. The memories I have of chatting around telescopes waiting for the darkness to arrive will be treasured forever. Ron, as we continue to gather and ponder the heavens, we know you will be with us.

You are in my thoughts and prayers. As one of many professional friends I remember just how important Ron was to my professional carrer. I learned so much working with him over the years.

Ron was an ambassador of the Columbus astronomical and the literary community here in Ohio but people worldwide knew him as a friend fist. I am honored to have known Ron - to have wonderful memories with him and friends around a telescope, looking over a 18 century book, or sitting at a large dinner table having a delightful conversation. Most of all I am glad to know his family and know they are out in the world making it a better place.
