Dear Amy,

I want to offer you my sincere condolences for what has happened. I recently learned of Steve's passing this past Friday and was very saddened .

Steve was one of my major painting professors when I was in school. I graduated in 96. I took several of his classes and Steve was my motivation to become a painting major. Steve would often show me his paintings in his studio. He gave me good advice on how to go about making paintings and how to mentally approach making artwork. I considered him a friend. I appreciated Steve.

I'm not sure what you're going through exactly, but whatever it is I hope it is endurable, whatever the range of emotions are. I'll keep you and your family in my regular prayers. I hope this will be encouraging to you.

Again, my condolences and God bless you.

Amy, Ryan & Neil,

I was shocked & saddened to hear of Steve's passing. Although we hadn't been in contact for a couple years, I will always consider him a true friend. I met Steve years ago at Edinboro when he was a grad & I was an undergrad painter...he showed me how to build a stretcher. We continued to stay in touch when I left for grad school...he was always so helpful & supportive. I was overjoyed when he was hired permanently at Edinboro...such an excellent painter & great teacher. Years later, I had the opportunity to teach w/ Steve when I returned to Edinboro as an adjunct instructor. He was "in my corner" professionally & personally: writing me a great letter of recommendation & helping me through the death of my mother & a divorce w/ his quick smile & affable nature. I am grieving now but am glad to have known such a man. I am so sorry for your loss.

Amy, my name is Dale Rose, and my mother is Susan Weimer, longtime painting professor at Edinboro. She has been griefstricken, as have we all, at the news of Steve's death. "He was a fine painter," she said. "I am so sad for Amy and the boys."

Please accept our deepest condolences and prayers for your healing.

March 19, 2008

Amy,
How very sad and shocking to hear of Steve's passing. I look back fondly on my early years in Edinboro when we were all just starting out as faculty member's families. I remember how warm and friendly Steve always was, and how down to earth you both were, which was so comforting. It is a shame how things seem to end up in the EUP community. So much promise lost.
I am here if you need to talk, cry, and eventually even laugh as time passes, although I know that now seems impossible.
Wishing you and your sons great strength in dealing with this tragedy.
Love,
Kim Rexrode

Words cannot begin to describe my sympathies for you. Although sporadic, every encounter with Steve was saturated with provocation and a deep love of everything life had to offer. It was apparent in every action, word and twinkling look that he would do anything for the people and things that he loved. Amy, Ryan, and Neil, please let this be a time to create new love and friendships in his honor. He is and will be deeply missed by so, so many. All of my thoughts and sympathies go out to you.

It was my good fortune to have had Steve as Chairman of my Graduate Committee. His genuineness and caring remains in my heart. His insightful counsel as a uniquely creative artist is well remembered, and often shared with my own students.

One of the delightful things he told me is that when you are struggling with a painting and don't know what to do with it, finding the right place to add some yellow usually fixes it! And he smiled. Yellow makes even white brighter.

I truly never add yellow to a painting without thinking of him. I wish him the bliss of warm and radiant yellows.
My deepest sympathy to Amy, Ryan and Neil.
