John J. O'Day

John J. O'Day formerly of Leominster; 84 LEOMINSTER John J. O'Day, 84, formerly of Leominster, died Sunday, August 24, 2008 in The Golden Living Center, The Hermitage in Worcester. He was born March 1, 1924 in Fitchburg, the son of John J. and Sarah (McAnn) O'Day. Mr. O'Day graduated from St. Bernard's High School in 1941 and was a graduate of Bentley College. He was a D Day and Battle of the Bulge veteran during WWII and was in the 158th and 1128th Combat Engineers. Mr. O'Day received five Battle Stars, the President's Unit Citation and the Purple Heart. Mr. O'Day was the president and owner of Creative Consultants, an advertising and public relations agency, in Leominster. He was the former General Manager of WFGL Radio in Fitchburg for 28 years. He was a deeply civic minded person with a big heart and always had a story and a laugh for those he met. He was a former Commissioner of the Leominster IDC, a member and former President of the Friends of the Leominster Public Library, a former President of the Massachusetts Friends of Libraries, a member and past director of the Fitchburg Rotary Club, a member of Veterans Battle of the Bulge, Worcester Chapter #22, a board member of Our Father's House and 24 year member and past Chairman of the Montachusett Salvation Army. He leaves his wife, Irene F. (Gainey) O'Day and his daughter, Kathleen Carlson of Half Moon Bay, CA. He was predeceased by three brothers, Thomas F. O'Day, William E. O'Day and James M. O'Day and two sisters, Elizabeth Loftus and Dorothy E. O'Day. O'DAY A funeral service will be held Thursday, August 28, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., Fitchburg. Burial will be private. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friends of the Leominster Public Library, 30 West St., Leominster, MA 01453.
