Kauko Haapala Obituary

Kauko M. Haapala lifelong Ashby resident; 85 Ashby Kauko M. Haapala, 85, died Monday, November 24, 2008 at Health Alliance Leominster Hospital, after a brief illness. Mr. Haapala was born in Monasson, Pennsylvania, August 25, 1923, a son of Manuel and Hilma Haapala and was a lifelong Ashby resident. Mr. Haapala worked over 40 years at the Simonds Saw & Steel Company in Fitchburg, retiring in 1985. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the Fitchburg Rod & Gun Club and a life member of the Fitchburg Sportsman's Club. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lillian M. (Bouchard) Haapala, two daughters; Judy L. Jacobson of Ocala, Florida and Samadhi C. Haapala of Athol, a son: Martin Haapala of Melbourne, Florida, five grandchildren; Brandon Smith, David Haapala, Wendy Fontaine, Darren Fuhs and Derek Fuhs. He also leaves four great grandchildren; Zachary Smith, Shannon Smith, Andrew Fuhs and Gavin Fuhs. HAAPALA Funeral services and burial will be at the convenience of the family. Judy, Marty, Carol and Lil: I am so sorry to hear about Kao.
I have very fond memories of him at the camp, running his dozer and all the "jury rigging" repairs that he did. He was such a creative and self sufficient man who I admired. I remember him saying something like "why pay someone a lot of money to fix something when I can do it". He was very clever and could fix almost anything.
Lil, take care of yourself and keep active.
I wish I could have gone to the funeral service to pay my respects, but I am in Florida.
