Chin Family -

Words can not express how sorry I was to learn of Roy (Chops) passing. A lot of the best times of my life were spent with Roy (and Sid) with a lot of those times revolving around hockey, of course.

Please know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

It is so sad to have heard about your father. My kids adored him! I remember when my father died and your mom and dad made us a couple of meals that were just fantastic. He had a wonderful heart and a great sense of humor. I enjoyed his love for children and his passion to make a difference in the lives of many. He will be greatly missed.
May God comfort and keep you in your time of mourning. Know that your parents raised a great bunch of kids!

To Colin and his brothers,

Very sorry to hear of your loss. Your dad was a very special man. I met him when I was a 14 year old girl working concessions at Gunnar Elliott Ice Arena. Then I knew Colin when he played hockey at McMillian. The thing I remember to this day about your father was his warmth, sense of humor and his fairness.

My thoughts and prayers are with you Colin (and your families).

My heart goes out to the family of a very special man. None of us will ever forget how I could never get that "mustang" running, and he ran it till the wheels fell off. While i was still at home, he always honked the horn with a smile to let me know that it was still moving. Brings a smile to my face every time i think of it. God Bless you all.

To the Chin Family:
I was so shocked and saddened to read of Roy's passing. The man was one in a billion! He was a huge influence in my son's life, and in all his hockey years. "Dad" Chin was the epitomie of what a father, a mentor and a friend should be. He is with Sid now, and looking down on all of us who loved him, smiling. Rest in peace my friend, you will never be forgotten, and always be loved.

Chin family,
We are very sad to hear of a Great Mans passing. When we moved here almost 16 yrs ago he was one of the first people I met at the rink and he immediately made me feel at home with hockey in FW. What a kind, generous, genuine and very funny guy. The world and in partcular the hockey community has lost a GEM. Everyone one who has ever met him is a better person for it! I feel fortunate to have shared the ice and the fishing stream with him, and gotten to know his wonderful family with him. God's spead, our prayers are with your family.

I am very sad to hear of the passing of Mr. Chin. While I only met Mr. Chin once or twice briefly, I heard many stories about Mr. and Mrs. Chin from Colin, Randy and Todd with whom I've worked for a few years. The love and respect for both Mr. and Mrs. Chin was always obvious when any of the Chin brothers spoke of them. My prayers go out to the Chin brothers and their families during this difficult time.

MARSHA BOOKER

March 23, 2009

To the family of Roy Chin, it seems like everyone has a memory to tell about how your dad touched their lives. I read about your dad being sick a few months ago and thought way back to the days when I use to baby-sit his sons, (the only names I can remember are Colin and I think Randy). My family lived 2 or 3 doors from them on Fisher St. I'm sure even if they don't remember me, they would remember my mother Bernice Johnson, or maybe my blond haired sister, Sybil or red-headed brother, Glenn, either way I use to baby-sit them. The memories that I have most are those kids skating on Fisher St. as soon as there was enough ice on the ground (street) to skate on. They could barely walk but they could skate. Also, I remember that "dog" they had that use to chase me soon as it was let outside and I'd step out on Fisher St. I was scared to death of that dog. Roy was a very nice person to all who met him. We, the entire Johnson Family are praying for you and your families during this period of your grief. When my father, Parnell Johnson passed away a couple of years ago there were several things that gave me strength to go forward with my life, knowing that my father was a saved sinner and that God only loaned him to me for a moment (which was way to short, a mere 50+ years), (Job:1:21). As a saved sinner, I too, would one day see my mama and daddy again in heaven.

Chin Family,
There are not enough kind words that could be said about your dad that would come close to doing this extraordinary man justice.
He was a person who upon meeting him your life is changed immensely for the better.
You always felt like you were the most important person to him in his presence and never walked away from him without laughing or with a hug grin.
God Bless you all during this difficult time.

Roy, you've touched so many lives it is extremely hard to quantify. For me it was the 300 man-games a year for nearly 10 years that you, Jack DeTurk, and myself worked to provide Fort Wayne youth hockey with the highest quality of officiating possible. It was your dedication, hard work, humor, and example that the three of us used to keep each other sharp. While we all kind of took each other for granted at the time we all knew you were the glue that kept us a tight cohesive unit on the ice as well as off. Rest in peace, my friend and say hello to lovely Sid and Jack for me. To the boys; Colin, Todd, Rod, Randy, and Gordie, your parents are extremely proud of all of you and what you've become. There are 1,001 plus "Roy" stories to be told. And all of them are good. Never a negative story to be told. My wife and I miss Roy and Sid but are comforted by their lives and you, their family. May God Bless all of you and hold Roy in His arms.

Dr. Greg Schneider

I am one of the thousands of people whose lives were touched in a positive way by having known Karol “Roy” Chin. I grew up playing youth hockey in Fort Wayne in the 1970’s and Mr. Chin - he will always be Mr. Chin to me - was the heart and soul of our sport. When he officiated a game, his word was the law. We knew and respected that.

I’m old enough that my earliest games were half ice affairs played at the Coliseum. Two games simultaneously, with a pair of nets, from parallel games sitting back to back at center ice. Mr. Chin would be officiating one of them and would occasionally have to skate into the other game in order to retrieve a wayward puck. It didn’t happen too frequently because our pucks moved so slowly.

As these games went on, the youngest and latest Chin son learning to skate, probably about two years old - probably Rodd or Randy, would be skating back and forth between the boards and the goals at center ice. Mr. Chin kept track of it all and made it work. That was quite an engineering feat.

As I grew and became more involved with hockey, Mr. Chin was always there. He seemed to be at every game and was always ready with helpful advice. I remember getting some minor injury when I was about 14; it was nothing serious, just sore. After the game Mr. Chin came up to me and gave me some Tiger Balm. He said that it was virtually magic and would take away the pain. I dutifully went out and bought some. To this day I keep Tiger Balm in the house. Every time that I have used it since, I think of Mr. Chin and it makes me smile.

I played hockey both with and against Colin and Todd. I was a good player, but did not pursue it to the level that they did. However, we all grew up on the ice together, no matter which side of the puck we were on. Mr. Chin was really a father figure to all of the young players in Allen County. We respected him. Nobody wanted to let down Mr. Chin.

I remember one particular season in which I had one of the highest penalty minute totals in the league. I would fight anyone over the slightest provocation. I spent more time in the penalty box than on the ice. I remember coming to the realization that my conduct was a disappointment to Mr. Chin. That realization made me feel very ashamed of my tough guy personae that I had adopted. I vowed to myself that I would change the way I played the game. The next season I had one of the lowest penalty minute totals in the league. Mr. Chin’s approval meant that much to me.

Mr. Chin taught us so much more than hockey; he taught us how to work together as teammates and how to strive against one another as honorable competitors. He taught me that it was OK if I didn’t score a goal, or if my team didn’t win. Through is quiet, steady example he taught me what it meant to be a man.

When I learned last fall that Mr. Chin was sick, very sick, I vowed to write him and tell him some of what I’ve mentioned above. I had time to reflect on just how profoundly he helped mold my character and shape the man that I have become. Unfortunately, I didn’t write in time. I want Mr. Chin’s family, friends, and all of Allen County to know just how much he meant to me and to my development from child to man. Mr. Chin made an indelible mark upon me. In no small way he helped to shape who I am and the values that I carry to this day.

I know that Mr. Chin touched other lives as he touched mine. In his nearly 50 year involvement in youth hockey, there must be many other such stories. Even still, it seems like he left us far too soon. I’m afraid that his death has left us all with an ache that even Tiger Balm will not relieve.

To the Chin family: God bless and know that Roy was well loved and will be missed by many, many, people.

To Mr. Chin: Thanks.

This is very sad news for all of us. Roy will always be missed at the rink but lives on forever in our hearts. We extend our love and deepest sympathy to his family.
