I met MSG Coons and got to know him when we were in the same PLDC Class at Ft. Hood. I was bragging about how I was getting out of Field Artillery and had re-enlisted to become a 74B Computer Operator. He listened intently on what I mentioned on how to go about re-classifying. Several months later while in school for my new MOS, Coon's shows up in a class a cycle or two after mine. We continued to develop our friendship and parted ways when I finished school and went back to Ft. Hood. I got orders to go to Okinawa Japan. Just like before, several months later, Coons shows up and assigned to my very same, squad, and unit. We just laughed. For three years we were good friends and would often go to lunch together, ride around the island together, did PT together. Even then Coons was a Super Soldier and often set the standard for us when itcame to soldiering. It was Coons who inspried me to get involved with NCO Competitions and I eneded being the NCO of the Year for our Brigade. He was also a caring and supportive friend. When I had to go away to BNCOC, he mowed my lawn, for a good three months so my wife didn't have to. I left service in 1998. He would often send me emails and call me Fat Boy because I told him I wasn;t working out any more and we would have a good laugh about it. Then the emails stopped coming and I wondered what happened to him. I ;ater did the reserach and found out about his tragic story. My heart goes out to him, his wife and children and family back home in TX. I will always think about him, and miss him. Walter Finnerty (SSG, USA)

July 30, 2012
I first met Army Master SGT James Curtis Coons, "Jimmy" in Summerville,SC on Driver Ave. in the subdivision of Corywoods in 1977 when he & I were both young boys. We soon became close friends. Our families are still very close to this very day. I remember Jimmy & I playing with Army soldiers, we tied them to some string with the other ends tied to a thin clothe as we folded the clothe up & wrapped the string around the soldier, then threw it as high into the sky as we could, as soon as it started to come down the wind would catch it & open it up; this was our way as little boys to change our little toy soldiers into Paretrooper Airborne Rangers. Jimmy knew then that he was going to jump out of airplanes, & be the best soldier ever in history. Jimmy, you done just that buddy. Jimmy was real smart, he knew he had to study hard in school to get a good job in the Army, & he studied hard to have the intelligents to score high on the enterance exam so he could choose the carrer as his Dad had in the Air Force, Communications. Jimmy came from one of the best families in this world, & it is my pleasure to be one of their friends, & even more of a pleasure to be one of Jimmy's close childhood friends. Jimmy & I were close, we played, & we fought; as all close friends would that got along like brothers. Jimmy was younger than me, but I still respected & admired him. His little sister Ann & his little brother Richard "ZZ", both looked up to Jimmy with admiration & respect. Jimmy was a loyal, faithful, & very honorable person with the utmost love & respect for GOD & COUNTRY, & NEVER disrespected his parents. I know from how Jimmy was as a child, that he made a great Dad & husband. He is a true honorable American Soldier. Jimmy, you are missed very much every day buddy, & I promise you, that you will "NEVER BE FORGOTTEN". I salute you & everyone else that has worn our colors as a uniform & in our blood. Anyone that knows me, knows I come from a very proud military family, & I also served in the Army, Airborne & Air Assult, Combat Engineer. I am very proud of knowing Jimmy as my friend for so long, & as one of my "BROTHERS IN ARMS".

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

I can remember James, of course we called him Jimmy as just a little boy at about 8 to 10 years old. He lived right down the road from me in Summerville S.C. We use to play with each other almost every. His family and mine was really close and a matter of fact, They still are close. Mom and Dad talk to his parents and goes and see them as much as they can. I will never forget the great times that jimmy and I had in the ditch behind our houses trying to catch Crawl-Dads and tad pols.
Rest In Peace Jimmy.

Psalm 23
1
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2
He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,
3
He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
5
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
6
Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!
My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

"Any Comments, Questions, and or Concerns?" -- Popular quote by MSG Coons.
I will always remember MSG Coons as one of the best First Sergeants I have had in the time I have been in the military. Even though he was the acting 1SG, (at Carlisle Barracks, PA) he went above and beyound the call of duty in everything he did. He was the President at all of my boards, and he encouraged me to do well all the time. He was motivating, easy to talk to, a good friend, fun to cut-up with and picture perfect and at his best when you saw him with his wife, and two little girls. Mark and I will never forget him.
Robyn, I know my words will not be able to take away the loss or hurt you feel in your heart and soul, but please know that your husband, and Misaki and Chloe's Daddy, was a man, person, soldier, and father they will be able to look up to for the rest of your and their life.

"No one is more professional than I. I am a Noncommissioned Officer, a leader of soldiers".
The first line of the NCO Creed.
In 15 years of service I have never met a leader that exemplifies the meaning of that statement the way MSG Coons did. There are some leaders that lead out of obligation and others that lead because they have a good heart and actually care for the well being of soldiers as human beings, that was MSG Coons.
It was truly an honor and a privilege to serve under him and receive his outstanding mentorship and wisdom.
The Army has lost a great leader and soldier. Those of us that new him have lost a great friend and confident. He was greatly admired, respected, and loved by so many that knew him.
Robin, Misaki and Chloe, you will continually be I our prayers and may God continue to bless all of his family and friends as we pray for understanding.

We were the Coons' neighbors in Carlisle, PA for over two years. We hit it off right away and have always considered them family. James was like a brother. When Andy went to Kuwait, James stepped up to the plate for me and was such a help. He trimmed my hedges, mowed my lawn and even checked on me and motivated my kids when I was sick. We always told James and Robin that they were the best neighbors we had ever had, and that still holds true to this day. James was always making us laugh and that's what we'll remember. After spending time with them, he would say, "So long, my friend." We will miss you so much, James, but we know we will see you again. So, this isn't good-bye, it's just, "So long, my friend."

Little did we know, whenever we met James and Robin (and the Whitlock's) in Lamaze class, that our friendship would grow into one that feels more like 'extended family' than friends . . . but that's exactly what our friendship with James and Robin (and the girls) feels like to us. Since hearing the sad news of James passing, it has been difficult, if not impossible, to focus on anything else. We have shed many tears, and have said many prayers. We have also been remembering all the wonderful memories that we have of James - like the trip that we took to "The Mountains" last May with James, Robin, and the girls - and how James could always keep everyone smiling (and laughing)!
James will greatly missed, and never forgotten. . . and we have no doubt that James will be 'one tough Guardian Angel' as he watches over his precious Robin, Misaki, and Chloe. We love you, James, and feel blessed for having known you.
