Robert Primack Obituary

PRIMACK, ROBERT BORIS, 84 Gainesville - Dr. Robert Primack, age 84, died August 12, 2006, at home. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he grew up in the Bronx in New York City. At 19, he bought a chicken farm in New Jersey, eventually owning several farms. He was active in local political and philosophical discussion groups and community theatre. Having returned to college and graduate school at Rutgers University in the 1950s, Dr. Primack was invited to University of Florida where he taught Social Foundations of Education for over 30 years. He was named a UF President's Scholar in 1978-79. An ardent reader all his life, and editor and compiler of the book Issues in Foundations of Education, he also wrote and published a Foundations of Education Monthly Newsletter for many years. Dr. Primack contributed many letters to editors of the Asbury Park (NJ) newspaper, Gainesville Sun, New York Times, and other publications, based on his extensive study of current periodicals. Dr. Primack is survived by his wife Alice Primack, son and daughter-in-law Eric Alexander Primack and Lisa Primack, Austin, Texas; daughter Mary-Anne Primack, Tallahassee; and son Glenn Samuel Primack, Gainesville. Dr. Primack was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, and a Democrat. He donated his body to the Anatomical Board for use in scientific studies. A Celebration of Life will be planned at a later date. A scholarship is being set up at the University of Florida College of Education. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the scholarship may be made payable to and sent to the University of Florida Foundation. Dr. Primack was my professor at UF. He challenged me in a way no one else did. Because of him, I will always set goals with my students, provide the instruction to meet those goals and reward those that achieve. His "A" is one I have kept!

My heart goes out to the Primack family for their loss. However, please know that Dr. Primack lives on in all the lives he touched by his teaching, writing and example. I, for one was refreshed by his class at the College of Education. I will never forget his discussion about "The Myth of the Dedicated Teacher". It has served me well in a variety of situations. And I pass it on to others to try to help improve the lot of education majors. God bless.

My condolences to Professor Primack's family. Not only have you lost a father and husband, we (our community, University and world) have lost a great man and great teacher. A teacher in the strictest and most wonderful meaning of the word. A teacher who lead and would not accept anything but the best from his students. In a world becoming increasingly difficult and complicated, he was rare beacon of rationality and logic. Our world desperately needs more teachers like Professor Primack. I'm so sorry at your loss.
