I just heard the terrible news about Valerie, and I wanted to express my sorrow. My heart goes out to the Gendernalik family. Valerie was an AmeriCorps member with the program I coordinated in California, and she was truly a shining star. She brought so much love, laughter and kindness to everything she did. All of us, and particularly the kids she served, were very lucky to share a year of her life. Please know that Val is missed, loved, and remembered here in Sonoma County, and that all of us with the AmeriCorps program are deeply saddened by her loss.

Maybe it's that the holidays are in full swing, maybe I'm just terrible at coping, but I'm so unaccepting of the fact that I can't just call Val out of the blue or vice versa. I hadn't seen Val in nearly two years when I heard of her passing, but occassionally she'd call and her scratchy voice would immediately remind me of the ridiculous fun we had together. I miss you, Val and I miss our chats even more. I'm so thankful that I was even able to know you and your parents. My condolences to Alex, Larry and Larissa.

Val,
I met you through juco when you dated anthony and i have loved you ever since. I always think about our good times and never the bad. You have always been the most intelligent woman I have ever met. You never looked at the bad in people you looked past. You accepted people for who they were and nothing less. I have always loved you and always will. I remember school and CSU and having to call your mom because you fell and lost your tooth. You never shed a bad word or an ill statement. You just stood there enjoying life as you always did. I know you are in Peace now and have always deserved the best. My best wishes to your family and always a place in Michelle and My heart. Forever Crystal!

Larisa and Alex,
This is a tragedy that my mom and I are still trying to wrap our brains around. My heart breaks for you. Mom fondly remembers being the "official peanut butter and jelly sandwich holder". Everyday at the rink, Val would find mom and ask her to watch the sandwiches while she and Alex went off to play. I'll never forget the last time I saw Val at the dog park with you. I couldn't believe that the little girl I knew had grown into such a beautiful young woman. She will always be remembered as a wonderful person who had done more in her short 25 years than most of us will in a lifetime.
Beautiful Valerie

I am not there
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am in a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly falling snow.
I am the gentle showers of rain,
I am the fields of ripening grain.
I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush
Of birds circling flight.
I am the star shine of the night.
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room,
I am the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I did not die.

Val... where can I even begin. I can remember so much from our fun college times; they will leave an imprint on my heart forever. From waking up early in the morning to tailgate at CSU games, to traveling to Steamboat, and to learning the Thriller dance at the CSU gym and practicing it over and over when we got home. Along with these there are so many more moments I will cherish forever. I know we lost touch over the years, but I always considered you still a friend. I still even have the silver bracelet you gave me for christmas. I will keep it forever in remembrance of you. You were a great person and you always made me laugh. You will be missed. To Val's family... I'm so sorry for your loss. You are in my thoughts and prayers. God bless.

Larry, Larissa, and Alex,
Val and I went to CSU together. We lived a few doors away from each other our Freshman year of college. She was a wonderful friend, a free spirit, and a loving, honorable person. I am missing her more everyday and I am terribly sorry for your loss. Life is not fair and she was taken way too soon from this world. She did a lot of wonderful things for everyone and will be missed by all. I like to think she is in a better place. I will always miss and love you Val! You could always make me smile!

Val and I were on the improv comedy team at our high school together, and there were so many times she made me laugh to the point of tears. My brother, Rob, and I were both so fond of Val, and she was by far one of the funniest, most vivacious people I've ever known. The world is a little less bright without Val, and I'm sad that we won't be able to share one more laugh together. My deepest and most sincere sympathies go out to the Gendernaliks and Val's close friends. She will be sorely missed.

Val, i dont even know where to begin. I guess i will start by saying that words can not express how much you truly mean to everyone and how much you have impacted our lives. We grew up together and I always looked up to you. We went from being long time family friends to forming a friendship like nothing in this world. You have the biggest heart and always made everyone smile and laugh. You have made my life so much better by being who you are and sharing with me your life and friendship. We had some pretty funny moments and you always made me feel like i was blessed to have a friend like you.I am going to miss all your funny borat impressions and russian accents when you told a joke or wanted to make everyone laugh.Or when you would come help me close the bar at the end of the night and had to mop because you said it was good for your abs. you always made everyone you were around happy and always wanted to help everyone. I am not going to say goodbye but I will say that you will be missed dearly and i cant wait to see you in heaven. I know you are watching over us, as we are mourning your passing and you will be there as we celebrate your life in the years to come. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. You are forever my friend, my sister, and i will never forget you. i love and miss you dearly.

Larry, Larisa, Alex,
Such a terrible loss for all of us. Her life was taken way too soon and she will be terribly missed. I will always remember Valerie jumping up and down at the Eiffel Tower counter (because she was only 10 therefore short) and asking the guy behind the counter questions. She just made us laugh. I cannot imagine what you all are going through and just want you to know that my thoughts and prayers are with you.
Love,
Laurence

I never got to meet Valerie as a young woman, but I do remember her as a child. She was full of life, always happy, and she cared a great deal for her brother and friends. She will be greatly missed, and the world is a much sadder place with out her in it.

"I knew her before she was born", that's what you used to tell everyone. We grew up together. Birthdays, holidays, school we were always together. We even moved from Maryland to Colorado together. I thought you would always be here. I don't know how to go on with out the only constant that has been in my life. I miss you so much already. I know that you will watch over everyone that you love and be there to help eveyone of us who are struggling with loosing you. You have always had the biggest heart. I'll keep you with me for the rest of my life big sis.
