Pam and Family
It is with great sadness that I write this, as you and Brian were (and still are) truly good friends and neighbors. Good ones are hard to come by and we will miss him. We're here whenever you need us, please know that. I just wish I knew how to help ease your pain. Take care and God Bless.

I was shocked to receive an e-mail today informing me of Brian's passing. I shall remember the classic poker nights in Bagram, the multitude of talks over hard Army issues, and his professional handling of the crisis during the Pakistan earthquake. Brian will always be remembered for the fine officer that he was...professional and courageous. My sympathies to the family.

I had the great pleasure of meeting LTC Brian, and his lovely wife Pam, during the World Cup held in Germany, last year. Though I met them that one time only, I felt that I had never met two better people. Needless to say, I was profoundly saddened when I learned of Brian's passing. My heart goes out to his wife, and their entire family. As a Christian, I know that he is resting peacefully in the arms of God. Pam, may you and your family find peace in knowing that Brian is okay. God Bless you all.

LTC Delaplane-
I want you to know what a great impact you had on me in the short time you were with us. You were an incredible mentor to me. I always looked up to you, and aspired to be great like you someday. Even though I only had the pleasure of working with you for few months, I will remember the things that you taught me for the rest of my Army career. Thank you for all you have done so far, and for all that you will continue to do for me in the future.

My wife and I are very saddened to hear of LTC Brian's passing.
He took the time to hunt down our Marine son while he was in Afghanistan and emailed us to assure us he was doing well and in good spirits.
His blog helped us through our son's deployment in Afghanistan and his "Nine Lines" entry will always have special meaning.
Thank you LTC Brian for your service. You were and honorable and decent man.

Sir,
I got in and I start Jan 08. I’m going do my best. I won’t give up, and I’ll push myself through. I know you’ll be watching, protecting, and probably laughing. I just wanted to say thank you so much for the counsel, and camaraderie. I really looked up to you and I probably should have let you know. I'll do my best with what you've helped me to achieve and I'll work hard to emulate your leadership, courage, and candor. Sir, I’ll see you when God calls me home, but until then my fellow GOOD DUDE, Battle Ready.

There are absolutely no words to explain the shock that fell upon us when were were informed of Brian's passing. It hit us so hard that we had a lot of trouble coming to grips with the fact that Brian was gone. This tragic loss of a wonderful human being and friend has just hit us so hard. We think about Brian every day and night and we'll never forget the Brian that we knew. He was a superb Leader and Soldier who had very strong values and truly believed in our mission in the Gulf. I know this because we had plenty of intellectually stimulating conversations over this and a myriad of subjects throughout the four years of our "too short" friendship. Plainly, we just haven't slept one good night since he passed. The last time we saw Brian was on 20 Sep 07 in NYC. That was the last time I saw his face and shook his hand. He was a true patriot, gifted writer and friend, who will be sadly missed and remain in our memories and hearts forever. To say that I really respected Brian is an understatement. We shared so many of the same interests, especially when it came to history, politics, literature, film, music, you name it, and his sense of humour, especially when we were poking fun at the world together, could keep us both laughing throughout the night (with the help of a few Guinness). He was one of the few people who could really make me laugh and that says quite a bit... I still have his "Truman Capote Short Stories," which he gave to me prior to PCSing from Germany this last spring. I only wish I could give it back to him and we could keep swapping books back and forth.
Dear friend, we know you are in good hands. You will remain in our memories and hearts forever and we miss you so much.

I just found out as well about LTC Delaplane's passing. He was an amazing man -- possibly the best officer I ever worked for. He was going to have such an influence on the next generation of army officers -- he will be sorely missed. My best to you and the family and my heartfelt condolences.

I am deeply grieved at the loss of this fine, decent and patriotic American. I have no doubt that this journey he has enbarked upon will bring him safely "Home", and here I refer to a post on Firepower Forward of such a moving nature that it remains in my mind to this day. It was from the words on his blog, that poured there from his heart and his soul that many came to know, admire and respect LTC Brian Delaplane. I am one of these. I send my deepest sympathy and condolences to Pam, his other family and his friends. Godspeed LTC Delaplane. You will be missed.

I've said it over and over again since I found out...but I just can't believe he's gone. I just can't believe it. I am stunned, and devasted. No, I never met him in person. Instead, I got to know Brian and his family through his blog. He was the first "stranger" to blogroll me. I remember how passionately he wrote about his love for you, Pam, and the kids too. The toast he gave at the wedding (honestly, I can't remember if it was a son or daughter who got married- sorry) has stuck with me. He wanted to warn you/us about taking our spouse for granted, and to make sure that we always- ALWAYS- treasure our families.
Brian, you will be sorely missed by hundreds, if not thousands, of people. I am so sorry for your loss, Pam. He loved you so much- the kind of love every woman wants from their husband. His dedication to you and the kids from both marriages was SO obvious.
The world was a better place with you in it, Brian. We'll miss you SO much.

I stumbled upon FirePower before I had the guts to blog myself-(I need a Map) and was absolutely awed by the insight and words of Brian Delaplane. I am so sorry for the loss of such a great man and leader. The impact he had on others must have been incredible. It would have been a pleasure to know him. All the best to those he leaves behind.

Pam and Family,
We were so shocked and saddened to hear about Brian's passing. Men don't come any better than LTC Delaplane. The Firepower Forward Blog he maintained while the 191st was deployed to Afghanistan was, in many ways, a lifeline for me. Brian's perspective and compassion are unmatched, and I will never forget him.
Following are words my late mother wrote following the death of her sister. May they give you peace, as they do me.
Have no fear of death.
'Tis but a sleep
From which you shall awaken and feel blessed
With all that Nature's God hath let you keep,
All save your body which accepts its rest.
Your Soul in no such anguish lies as does
Your flesh, which will return to Earth's own dust;
Your Soul is lifted from the self that was
And enters into Life's Eternal Trust.
In earthly life we seek but rarely find
The key to purest joy and perfect peace;
But God has promised this and more in kind
To thee after life's transitory lease.
Dismiss the creeds that fail to answer "why"
And know this Truth:
that Heaven is no lie.

Pam,
I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Brian. I consider myself very fortunate to have had him among my "ranks" at Merrill Lynch.
I'll always remember Brian as a colleague, scholar, and a hero, that I am proud to claim was truly a good friend. He served and sacrificed for his country in the most honorable way and who has once again demonstrated how fragile life really is.
If there is ANYTHING I can do for you Pam, please let me know.

Pam,
You said it best yourself: an intense personality like his just does not die. We'll spend the rest of our lives asking ourselves, "what would he do?" Thank God that he will be with us always to answer.
I have so many great memories of LTC D and his special brand of intuitive leadership and compassion. It's obvious from this guest book that he affected many other people in this way, too. BD, we'll miss you always.

I was so saddened to read about Brian's untimely death. Although I didn't know him personally, I had occasionally contacted his family here locally while he was deployed in Afghanistan. I especially appreciated Brian's extraordinary skills in countering the local armchair war philosophers who routinely wrote letters to the editor while he himself was in harms' way. I kept, and now treasure, those writings.
He was a blessing to us all!
