Robert Michael "Mayor Bob" Isaac

Robert Isaac Obituary

January 27, 1928 ~ May 2, 2008. Robert Michael Isaac, born in Colorado Springs on January 27, 1928 to Albert and Sigrid Isaac, passed away on May 2, 2008 from complications with pneumonia. Bob graduated Salutatorian from Colorado Springs High School in 1945. He received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy in 1947 and graduated with a B.S. degree in electrical engineering in 1951. He then served overseas in Germany followed by teaching mathematics at West Point. He left the military after the required years of service to pursue a law degree at the University of Southern California. While attending law school at night, Bob worked as a sales engineer for The Trane Company. Upon graduation from USC law school in 1962, he returned to Colorado Springs to begin practicing law in the city that he truly loved. He was the assistant district attorney from 1965 -1966. He soon became a municipal court judge (1966-1969), and then began his own private practice. He had always professed his passion for wanting to take an active part in his hometown that he loved, so he ran for city council 1975. He served as councilman from 1975-1979 before running for mayor in 1979. He then began a long stint as one of the most popular and successful mayors in the city's history. He was so distinctive that he was also elected president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and was well known and respected by his peers throughout the country. His intelligence, integrity, and firm sense of ethics earned him the respect of all political parties. "Mayor Bob" retired from the mayor's office, after nearly 20 years, in 1997 (a non-salaried position at the time). He was also a member of many clubs and organizations in the community. Bob was an avid sports fan usually able to recite the sports page verbatim. He was also a voracious reader, an avid fly fisherman and pool player, and in his younger years, enjoyed skiing, playing golf and handball. His five children all loved being kept on their toes by his keen wit and intelligence. "Charisma" was Bob's middle name. He never knew a stranger. He could walk into any room, anywhere, and be at home in no time. Everyone who knew and loved Bob knew that he was one of a kind, and he will be greatly missed. Bob is survived by his sister, Helen McCullough of Colorado Springs; daughters: Leslie Pfalmer (Bill) of Colorado Springs, Julie Harrington of Annapolis, MD, Melissa Denton (David) of Denver, Tiffany Isaac of Colorado Springs; son, Chance Isaac of Colorado Springs; grandchildren: Jeffrey Williams, McClain and Alex Fournier, Kristopher and Ryan Denton; and his cherished cousins, nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Union Printers Home or the Palmer High School Alumni Scholarship program. A private service for family, close friends and invited guests has been arranged at Grace and St. Stephen's Church. A public memorial service is scheduled for Friday, May 9, 2008 at 11:30 a.m., at the City Auditorium, 221 E. Kiowa, Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Mayor Bob was 3 times the citizen - Military service, public service and private businessman. He was one of my late father's (Cab Brannon) favorite friends. Heaven exits because of people like Mayor Bob. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Bob, and his entire family, opened up their home to me in a time of my life when I really needed guidance. I will always remember his gruff low voice that spoke with wisdom and integrity. My thoughts and prayers go to his family, especially my dear old friend Tiffany..I know how hard it is to lose a dad.

Our fond memories of Bob begin with him serving as honorary Mayor of Village Seven where many of us resided in the 70's. We had an annual parade with the kids on decorated bikes and wagons with Mayor Bob riding in our borrowed convertible. Also remembered are the many times we fished the trout-filled waters of Ice Lake in Buena Vista as guests of Sam and Elaine Colt. He became an icon for our City and his many contributions will be long remembered.

As another Colorado Springs native, I always appreciated Bob's intelligent leadership in helping make this city prosper so well for so many years. Our children went to school together so I also got to know him a little on a personal level. His gruffness was more than tempered by his kindness and interest in people. It's hard to lose such a wonderful member of our community.

Mayor Bob:

Having been a city employee for 25 years, it was my greatest pleasure to know you and work with you. You were a kind man with a great smile and a wonderful sense of humor. You were the best mayor this city has ever known and those shoes will never be filled again. I may not have always agreed with you but I had the utmost respect for you and your loyalty to this city and to the city employees - more than once did I hear you defend us - you loved us and we loved you back. Your honesty and integrity are above reproach and we shall never know anyone like you again. I love you Mayor Bob and I will miss you. God Bless you.
