PETER UNDERWOOD ANDREWS

who had a successful architectural practice in Annapolis, Crofton and Washington, DC, died suddenly at home on Wednesday, November 21. He was 60.

Mr. Andrews was born in Greenwich, CT, and attended the Greenwich Country Day School followed by Phillips Andover Academy graduating in 1965. He earned his degree in Architecture at the University of Virginia in 1970.

He returned to Connecticut and worked with architect Bruce Graham for several years before relocating to Annapolis where he worked with Bob Hammond. In 1980, he established his own practice and had completed over 600 projects with more on the boards at the time of his death. Mr. Andrews had an especially strong repeat and referral client base, which attests not only to his talent for creative design and the quality of his work, but also the rapport he was able to establish on each and every project. His clients quickly became his friends.

Mr. Andrews was mentor to a number of young architects who interned in his office from time to time. Many have gone on to establish their own successful practices with the background he provided.

An avid sailor in his youth, he served as Junior Commodore of the Indian Harbor Yacht Club in Greenwich and often participated in races and regattas on Long Island sound. He enjoyed acting in musical theater productions while in school, playing Pooh-Bah in "The Mikado" and Mayor Shinn in "The Music Man". He also enjoyed traveling, and made two extended cross-country drives. He attended many of the American Institute of Architects conventions taking time to explore each new city. He recently celebrated his 60th birthday with friends on a weekend junket to Las Vegas followed by a reunion of his 1962 classmates at Greenwich Country Day School. He was especially delighted to see so many old friends.

Mr. Andrews' paternal grandfather, Archie M. Andrews Sr., was the guiding force behind the Ruxton automobile, a luxury car built in 1929-1930 that featured one of the first uses of front-wheel drive.

Preceded in death by his mother, Margaret "Pinkie" Andrews, he is survived by his father, Archie M. Andrews Jr. and step-mother Dorothy C. Andrews of Annapolis, two brothers, Archie M. "Buzz" Andrews III, of Burke, VA, and Duncan T. Andrews of Wellesley, MA, a niece and goddaughter Hannah Andrews of Virginia and two nephews, Will Andrews of Seattle, WA, and Matthew Andrews of Massachusetts. His extended family includes step-sisters Tanya V. Anderson, Elise C. Murphy, Elizabeth C. Roberts, Margaret C. Thallenberg, Katherine C. Witkowski and Christine C. Evans, and step-brothers John R. Conley Jr., David E. Conley, Michael A. Conley and Matthew J. Conley. Mr. Andrews leaves behind many more cousins, and scores of friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, November 29 at Christ Church, 254 E. Putnam Avenue, Greenwich. Interment will be in the family plot at Putnam Cemetery in Greenwich.
