It is hard to believe anyone could live life so large in 93 years and do as much as Aunt Alice did. There will always be Cornerstone Farm in many of our hearts because of the sense of community that transcended through Alice and all the Harpers beyond good and bad farming years, the Depression, war, family, children, and Life, that carries on in us. Aunt Alice offered greater depth and permanence for important memories through her avid letter writing, her teamwork in family history, her photography and developing her own film so artistically. Some Scrabble games in honor of Alice and Allen and some nature walks are in order. I appreciate that she gave so much of herself to family, readily sharing her interests and activities, her home sometimes overflowing with family and friends, cousins and exchange students, while also a place to just be or to heal life wounds. Her home could be a recital hall, or a space of quiet reflection or even a venue for a ping pong game. Alice and Allen conveyed that "home" meant to love and work the garden, care for community, wildlife, learning, artistry, discipline, music, faith, belief that we each can grow and find our path and contribute to a better world. Aunt Alice was the great facilitator of so much for so many, that I feel proud to celebrate her life. May rest in peace. She certainly earned it! My heartfelt condolences particularly to you, Allen and Susan, and each of your families as you grieve and recover from all you gave your mom of your untiring care the last couple of years. You both are a wonderful tribute to the character, humanity and adventure she and your dad shared.

What an accomplished and lovely lady.
The Stokes gave us our first wedding gift. A large, round tray which we used for many years. They were special friends of my husbands parents, J. Whitney and Viginia Floyd.
Our sympathy to your family.

Allen and Susan -- I was sorry to read of your mother's death in the Herald Journal. You and your parents were always such good friends of the Civilles in Logan. The establishment of the Stokes Nature Center created a lasting memorial to them and is a living contribution to the Valley. I'll be forwarding this information to my sister, Janie, in Olympia, WA.

Dear Susan & Allen,
It was very sad to learn of your Mother’s death and I wish to express my deepest sympathy. Alice was a dear friend to our entire family and I have the fondest memories of her and Allen . Alice and I played together in the Cache Community Orchestra under the baton of Max Dalby for many years. My late husband, Bill & I took a memorable tourof Mexico at Christmas time with Allen & Alice. We tried to absorb some of the Mayan culture along the way and Allen’s knowledge of the Spanish language was very helpful. He was adept at acting out whatever the instance called for so we got along famously. Alice & I were part of an unofficial lunch group of Wildlife Dept. wives that lunched together periodically, usually in honor of our birthdays. The others were Margaret Sigler, Marilyn Wagner and Ruth Neuhold. See attached photo taken in January, 1996. Alice contributed to Society in so many ways; It has been a great honor to be her friend. Many thanks to both of you for your loving care of your mother in these late trying years.
Much love, Ruth, Linda & Beth Helm

Aunt Alice was a big part of my younger life. I always looked forward to the Stoke family coming for a visit to Lancaster, Wis. where Alice grew up. She had a zest for life and lived life to the fullest. She touched many lives. If you asked her if the glass was half full or half empty, she would have said it looks more like 3/4 full! She had a very positive outlook on life. She will be missed by many people.

To Allen, Susan, Jules, Jane and to All, whose lives Alice may have touched, I send my deepest sympathies and prayers for your loss. Alice was an extraordinary Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, Teacher, Inspiration, and Intellectual Human Being. I will miss her many stories of her adventures, her kind demeanor, and her delightful presence. One of my fondest memories of Alice's many visits to Cornerstone Farm at Lancaster, Wisconsin was her child-like delight, when she would find a Pink or White Lady's Slipper growing in the woods. Her love of nature and wildlife will always standout in my fondest memories. My wish is for all to be inspired to carry on her zest for life and love of Nature...I know I am! Alice would like that.

Alice is such a wonderful soul, and my friend. I will think of her each visit to Logan, and each time I pray in Quaker Meeting. How lucky that I know her.

My love to you, Allen and Susan, and family. May all the memories of life with Alice and Allen continue to inspire you...as they do me. Alice was a bright, forthright soul. Her physical vigor late into life must have been nutured by the hard work on the farm.
I will miss her too.

My heart and prayers are with you at this time. Your mom was truely a wonderful teacher to me throughout my life. She had so much patience with the deaf children and I am proud to be one of them!! She was a role model for so many deaf children and she worked by my side for 15 yrs.! We share the same birthday and have the same letters in our names!! I have treasured many memories of her and some of the things that she has given me, I treasured! She has so much love for everyone and loves telling story after story or walk us through her wonderful garden that she and Allen have done. She will be missed by everyone and her memory will stay with me for the rest of my life!! I love you Mrs. Stokes!!!! :)

Susan,
We lived next door to you and we played together when you were home from school. Your mom was a true inspiration in my life and I have tried to follow her example of dedication to family and the world around us, tempered with patience, kindness and intelligence. She was truly a wonderful woman.

I lived on Maple Drive and knew your family during the 1960's. I used to babysit Julie and Jane while in my teens. I can't remember the name of the big old red dog but he is vivid in my memories of your family. I am saddened to hear of your loss. My father John Crockett passed away in 2000 and it never is the same. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.
