Isabel Katana Obituary

Isabel Katana, 94, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2008, at Logan Regional hospital of causes incident to age.
The youngest of four children, Isabel was born July 8, 1913, in Orange, N.J. Her parents were Armand John deRosset and Isabel Buloid Olcott. Isabel's earliest recorded ancestor is Nicholas deRosset who was born in Switzerland and left that country in the 14th century and went to France. But for a divorce in the family, Isabel would have been a true Southern Belle, being brought up on a southern plantation. Isabel married James V. Graham; they had a son, Vincent James Graham. They were divorced and she married Alton Wallace Fish, who adopted Jimmy. A daughter, Jerryle Gail (Jeri), came along to complete the family. They resided in San Francisco, Redwood City, Calif., and Long Beach, Calif. Isabel divorced Al in 1959 and married George W. Katana. They moved to Camarillo, Calif., where she lived until moving to Logan, Utah, in 1978, to be near her daughter and granddaughter, Angela Renee Hurlbert Peterson.
While in Camarillo, Isabel completed her degree and became a registered psychiatric nurse. This was an accomplishment of which she was very proud. She worked at Ventura State Mental Facility until moving to Utah, at which time she worked for the Logan LDS Hospital for several years.
Isabel is survived by her daughter, Jeri Garner Collings (Rich) and grandchildren, Angie Peterson (Bill), Jerilyn Fish Brown, Jonathon Fish, and Jamie Fish.
Isabel wished to say the following:
Those whose lives I have touched and for whom I cared know me as I was and as I hope to be remembered. I impacted this place; loved and was loved.
I did what I could for all I could reach and touch and care for.
I was an active and inactive member of many organizations and was a people person.
Do not cry over my departure, but do unto others as I did for many.
I was honored many times by many groups and individuals. This was appreciated and humbling.
Isabel donated her body to the University of Utah for medical research. Her life will be celebrated on her 95th birthday at 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 8. The celebration will be held at the Cache Valley Unitarian Universalists Church, 596 E. 900 North, Logan. Pastor Paul Heins of the First Presbyterian Church of Logan will represent Isabel's other church family.

To all who shared her time here on this earth have been blessed, I was not as fortunate as many to have spent a lot of time around her but always enjoyed her letters and conversations on the phone. God bless Gramma K, I'll always remember you from your visits to Coos Bay, Or.

To All Those Who Knew My Grandmother,

She was a remarkable individual and we were all better off for having known her. She taught me about perserverance, determination and not settling for less in life. It was because of her that I am so articulate, which served me well in the counseling profession. She used to write me letters that had words in it I didn't know, so I would have to go look in the dictionary for the meaning. Then I would pick out a word to share with her and would write back.
I am still in shock that she's not here, but I get the feeling she'll be keeping an eye on things and wil be helping out like she's done her whole life. There are alot of people out there who owe her a debt of thanks and they can honor her by passing forward something for someone else who needs it.
My Grandmother was phenomenal and I love her.

Jeri,

I am sorry to hear about your mother dying. I just happened on to her obituary online by chance and was very surprised. George Katana was my dad's brother. I was very saddened when they divorced, because I had plans to visit them in Camarillo just before they separated. I do remember her from when I was a young child. I am glad she was able to share a long life with you, but I know it's not easy losing those we are close to. My dad died in 1994 and my mom died March 8 this year. I hope you and your family are doing well besides the current grief you are going through. May God's blessings be with you.

I want to express my gratitude for the chance I had to know Isabel. She was a real coach and challenger in my life and that of my family while living in Logan during the 1980's. I have never forgotten her unique style and her devotion to a cause which she believed in. We have all been blessed to have had her touch us over the many years she graced this good earth.
God will bless Isabel, of that I am certain.

Hi Jeri - We want to wish you our deepest sympathy on the loss of your Mom. She was a great lady & we loved her as if she was "our" Mom. She always had the right words to say & really appreciated everything & anything you did for her. We will miss the memorial service since Amy is in Texas helping her daughter who just had triplets & I'm in Mexico (Baja) working on our retirement home. But, our thoughts & prayers will be with you.
