Scuba groups mourn diver

Instructor Eric Seibel died Sunday after exploring a shipwreck called the Lowrance, which lies under 210 feet of water near Hillsboro Inlet.

The South Florida scuba community was stunned and saddened Sunday by the death of Eric Seibel, a popular dive instructor who founded a divers' website and bulletin board.

BSO detectives are investigating Seibel's death, which came one day after his 50th birthday, scuba diving in deep water near Pompano Beach.

He was exploring a shipwreck called the Lowrance, which rests under 210 feet of water near Hillsboro Inlet.

According to Broward Sheriff's spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright, Seibel was part of a diving expedition aboard the Miss Conduct, a 27-foot vessel based in Pompano Beach.

Seibel's friend and dive buddy, Dr. Christos Koutentis of West Palm Beach, noticed that Seibel was ''experiencing complications,'' and brought him to the surface around 11 a.m.

In his own boat in the inlet Sunday, John O'Conner watched at least six Pompano Beach paramedics try to revive Seibel.

He said Seibel was bleeding from his ears, nose and mouth. ''The guy was white from head to toe,'' O'Conner said.

Seibel was taken to North Broward Medical Center, where he died around 11:30 a.m.

Laura Fogel Seibel, Eric's wife, said her husband was a ''very experienced'' diver who had been diving for more than 25 years.

''He loved the water,'' she said. ``Scuba diving was his life.''

He had two children, 11 and 13 years old, as well as ''hundreds and hundreds of friends,'' she said.

Heartfelt postings flooded the website of edivers.org, which Seibel founded.

''I am sad beyond belief to report we have lost E-divers #1 today,'' wrote Brian Patrick.

More notes poured in, citing Seibel's helpfulness and dive expertise.

''I'm truly heartbroken. . . Eric was a mentor to me and I greatly appreciated his guidance which he gave without ever making me feel inferior,'' wrote one friend.

Laura Fogel Seibel said her husband was a certified scuba instructor who was also qualified as a technical diver. He always carried all the proper equipment, she said, and performed ''redundant'' safety checks.

In addition to edivers.org, Seibel started a local diving club, ScubaSpearos -- combining his love for scuba diving and spear fishing, she said.

Seibel and his wife worked together in an advertising business, Fogel Advertising, and he also was involved in computer-related businesses.

''He was a wonderful husband and a wonderful father,'' his wife said. ``You could always count on him.''

The Lowrance is a five-story, 420-foot ship that was deliberately sunk as an artificial reef in 1984. At 210 feet, it's not an outing for beginners.

In an Internet posting Sunday night, his dive partner, Koutentis, an anesthesiologist, wrote about what happened. He realized that Seibel was ``seizing once we hit the wreck, with the regulator hanging out of his mouth.''

''We are at a loss as to what actually caused this, and I will not venture to speculate in a public forum at this stage,'' Koutentis wrote.

``Luckily, I did not take a hit myself and am in pretty good shape considering.''

At least four people have died while scuba diving in South Florida this year.

The Miss Conduct charter takes two to six scuba divers to popular wrecks and reefs, according to its website. The boat's captain, Conrad Nix, refused to talk about the incident Sunday.

Eric was a good friend, and he will be missed so very much by all of us who knew him. Everyone who ever met him has had their life enriched in one way or another. He left us too soon, but his spirit will live on in our hearts. Sleep well, and stay wet...

I've met and dove with Eric several times in the past few years, including a technical dive a week prior to the accident. We shared many discussions about diving and there was always an indepth view, as was most subjects that he fancied. I wish we had more time to extend our exchanges. He will be missed, and my thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Sincerely,

Marv Gozum

I never met Eric but read about his memorial today in Buzz Flash. I now wish I would have known him because he sounds remarkable. I have made a memorial contribution to TruthOut.com in his honor. My heart goes out to his family and friends. Sounds like he left a big footprint on your souls.

My sincere condolences.

I lost my dear cousin the same week. She had been doing peace and reconciliation work in Santa Fe, and died in an accident in England. I have yet to make sense of this. She too was involved in the larger issue of peace and restoring our country to its democratic ideals.

We have lost two magnificent souls, and we must carry on.

Our deep condolences in this time of loss.

While I've only met Eric a few times, they were memorable.

Generously, he donated his sailboat for decompression time for the first E-Diver "chick dive". I still remember the cool breeze while sitting on the stern of the boat. What a relaxing, enjoyable evening that I won't forget. Good food, great divers, interesting stories.

Eric has touched many lives including mine. He will be missed.

Sincerely,

William Anzueto

If you look at message #1 on E-DIVERS. www.edivers.org You'll see a note from Eric that will always be there.

My friend, I can answer you now very clearly. Yes, it works.

Eric and I met in 1999 when I just started diving and I would go out

on his sail boat many times. Lot's of times it was just the both of us for a day of sailing and diving. He was great friend and mentor to me.

On one of the return trips, he turned to me and said. "William, you should start a dive club." The next day, E-DIVERS was born and he

became The E-DIVERS Godfather.

He was wrong about one thing.

He said we would know E-DIVERS worked when nobody remembered who we were.

Eric, You'll never be forgotten.

Dive soon,

William

I have not been able to compose myself to write anything until now.

I have lost a very dear friend and he will be missed. Eric has been

my dive buddy for several years, a teacher, and a true friend. He

always had an ear to listen, and always had something to say

(including his politics). He even put his spear gun in my hands

several times and tried to teach me to shoot.

The pictures I have in my mind of Eric are all of him smiling,

joking, laughing. Wednesday nite on the boat: a picture of him

reading his birthday cards, at Mulligan's when JC kissed him on the

forehead and then we had a group hug, sitting on boats with Eric

discussing diving and spearfishing, and of course Eric talking about

my big boys, which always made me laugh.

My heartfelt condolences to Laura and his children. Eric, you truly

were loved and will be missed by all who knew you. You have left an

imprint on the lives of all who knew you. You are a unique

individual. I love you and will miss you. Nancy Orzack

Eric had a cabinetmaking business here in Brooklyn NY. It was successful in one of the toughest climates for the trade (he was like that wasn't he?) He hired me as a helper and trained me to be a cabinetmaker myself. He was my boss for 5 years and my friend from the beginning. I visited him down there a few times and he loved sharing his love of the water with me. I can't express what a loss this is - but if you knew him, I don't have to. My love and thoughts go out to Laura and the kids.

I had the pleasure of meeting Eric at this years e-diver get together and had a long talk with him about diving and life. I was looking forward to returning to S. FL and diving with in this year. Sadly his life has been cut short but his spirit will remain remembered with us as a group. Two things I'll always remember is he was a bull sharks best friend or at least that what everyone kidded him about and he loved to argue about politics. He will be missed by a lot of friends and family but not forgotten.
