Marvin Zindler Obituary

MARVIN HAROLD ZINDLER, SR., a well-known and tenured broadcast journalist, passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, the 29th of July 2007. A native Houstonian, Marvin was born on the 10th of August 1921 to the late Abe and Udith Mayer Zindler. After serving in United States Marine Corp, Marvin joined the family's retail clothing business, Zindler's, and then pursued a variety of interests. He served twelve years with the Harris County Sheriff's Department where he started the Consumer Fraud Division during a time when consumer advocacy was very much in need. Following his career in law enforcement, Marvin began his broadcast journalism career with ABC 13 where he served for thirty-five years as the community's consumer advocate. He developed a legacy of providing thoughtful and sincere assistance to those in need; many of whom having found themselves in situations where there was no one else to turn to. Many tributes and stories have detailed Marvin's professional life and his career; and the family is indeed grateful for the many considerate expressions, kind remarks, and professional compliments. In addition to his professional career, Marvin was a 33rd Degree Mason at Temple Lodge No. Four, a member of Congregation Beth Israel, a lifetime member of the Jaycee's, and a member of the Braeburn Country Club. Marvin's passions were his beloved family, his professional life and nurturing the many friendships he developed along the way, and his golf games at Braeburn. He always looked forward to the annual golf tournaments benefiting two organizations very dear to him, the Houston Ear Research Foundation and Houston Eye Associates Foundation. In addition to his parents, Marvin was predeceased in 1997 by his wife of fifty-six years, the late Gertrude Kugler Zindler; and by his brothers, Warren, Sterling, and Abe Zindler. Marvin is survived by his wife, Niki Divine Zindler; daughter, Helen Zindler Rodgers and husband Mike of Katy; sons, Marvin Zindler, Jr. and wife Linda of Kingwood, Donny Zindler of Houston, Mark Zindler and wife June of Tyler, and Dan Zindler of Houston; grandchildren, Courtney, Shay, Kelli, Aaron, Lauren, Leslie, Seth, Austin, and Adam; great-grandson, Aiden; and by his brother, Kenneth and wife Lu of Houston. He is also survived by Niki's children, Andrea Gale, Jeffery Gale and wife Janie, Bruce Gale, and Matthew Gale; all of Las Vegas, Nevada. The family desires to express their sincere and heartfelt appreciation to the nursing staff at The Methodist Hospital and to the nursing staff at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center's Palliative and Symptom Control Unit for their dedicated and loving care provided to Marvin. In addition, the family offers their deep gratitude to Dr.s Robert Wolff and Nada Fadul. Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from three o'clock in the afternoon until seven o'clock in the evening on Tuesday, the 31st of July, in the Parlor of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. The funeral service will be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Wednesday, the 1st of August, in the temple of Congregation Beth Israel, 5600 North Braeswood Boulevard in Houston, where Senior Rabbi David A. Lyon, Cantor Robert M. Gerber, Dr. Kirby John Caldwell, Pastor Joel Osteen, and the Rev. Dr. William A. Lawson will serve as officiants. The entombment will follow, via an escorted cortege, at Congregation Beth Israel Memorial Gardens, 1111 Antoine Road in Houston. Honored to serve as casketbearers during the services include Joe Agris, Bob Dows, Henry Florsheim, Dr. Harvey Fodell, Jeffrey Gale, Dr. Louis Green, Tom Magliaro, and Robert Pelton. Serving as honorary pallbearers include Harold Weisenthal, Larry Barbanel, Sam Spritzer, Dave Strickland, Don Clark, Pino Farinola, Adriano Farinola, Ralph Williams, Houston Police Chief Harold Hurtt, Harris County Sheriff Tommy Thomas, as well as all of Marvin's Angels. In lieu of usual remembrances, the family suggests contributions in memory of Marvin be directed to the Marvin H. Zindler, Sr. Fund for Pancreatic Cancer Research, in care of Dr. Robert Wolff, MD Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, TX, 77210-4486.

Memories and Condolences

Not sure what to say?

July 25, 2024

Way back in 1975, I had the privilege of meeting Marvin Zindler during one of his dirty restaurant report visits at Jeff Davis High School. Thanks to Mr. Zindler, almost nobody wanted to eat in the cafeteria, so I had the entire cafeteria to myself for a week. I will always appreciate our first visit and not having to wait long in line for food all because of him.

To all of his family, he was a great man (not just for the faster food). And to this day, Channel 13 is still the only station I ever watch, so I hope you can find some comfort in knowing that his legacy lives on in many different ways even now.

I moved to Houston in 1983 and came to know Mr. Zindler via television. He became a big part of my families life as they grew and spread around the country, they would comment "What is Marvin up to now?" or "What restaurant is on the hot seat this week?" He was 'eyewitness news' greatest fellow. I will miss him dearly, as does my family!

We the poor people will never have anyone else to look out for us again. I loved the man even though I never met him personally. I'm 19 yrs. old and I grew up watching Marvin Zindler. There has never been a day that I can remember Marvin NOT being on t.v. He did "Slime in the Ice Machine" and most recent "Marvin's Angels." He was always around to help the less fortunate. We need more people like that in this world. He will be missed.

His death came as a shock.

I didn't know he was sick.

No one can replace him -- but I wonder who will succeed him. Houston still needs a "Git-R-Done" public gadfly to keep people honest.

I never met Mr. Zindler personally, but I admired him for making such a huge difference in this world when no one else seemed to care. I know he has a special place in heaven, just because of his big heart and for being so unselfish. His time on the news was always my favorite, warming my heart the way he did, always finding out who needed help and finding a way to help those in need, who couldn't help themselves. He was right, it is hell to be poor, but because of his loving heart and unselfish spirit, he made the world a much better place to live. He left his mark on this ol' world, and will never be forgotten. May he rest in peace. And, I know, Heaven rejoiced when he came home. A job well done. Love and peace to your family, Mr. Zindler. I can only say that Houston will be most empty without the bold and undeniable presence of Marvin Zindler. As a student nurse many yrs ago, I had the opportunity to care for one of his granddaughters at MemCityGen Hospital and had the best time meeting all of the family and Mr Zindler. I will never be able to watch the news in Houston again without missing his "slime in the ice machine" or hearing his sign off. My condolences to the family for the physical loss of an enigmatic personality! He will be missed and you now have a wonderful guardian angel to watch over you all.

August 9, 2007

To the Zindler Family,
Even though I didn't know Mr. Zindler personally, our family knew of Marvin Zindler for so many years on Channel 13. My Grandmother, my Mother, myself, and my children. You really took care of everyone who needed help. I will miss you! From Houston, Texas

To Marvin Zindler's family: May it comfort you to know that Marvin definitely had a place in Heaven waiting for him. By being the true Angel he was, he showed us all how to live our lives and care for others. He was a shining example of how God wants us all to live -- I hope a lot of people will learn that lesson from his death. Know that you will see Marvin again as he gets everything organized in Heaven while he waits for each of you. God rest your soul Marvin Zindler, I feel privileged to have had you fighting for our city and our city's people for so many years!

To the Family of Marvin Zindler,
Marvin was a rose, a rose ready to be picked by God. God knew Marvin had grown to perfection, and was tired and ready to go to his home in the sky. Marvin is now, at his final resting place. Marvin is at a prepared place for prepared people. No more roaches, rats or slime in the ice machine. So, I leave you with this thought, look to the hills for whence cometh your help which is in Christ Jesus. We will alway remember this great man. Marvin Zindler!

August 6, 2007

My condolences to the Zindler family. I first met Marvin Zindler during the summer of 1967 when I was an 18-year old college intern with the Houston Chronicle. Supposedly, H. Rapp Brown (a black power activist wanted for murder) was heading for Houston. I was sent to the sheriff's office to check it out. Marvin, head of the fugitive squad, was unfailingly kind and helpful to this 'green' copy kid. Over the years, he would always ask how I was doing and was delighted when I entered the Navy. I saw him last year at a fund-raiser, and we had a good laugh since I still carried his business card from those days, black background with gold type. He was a bright lamp and Houston's lights are dimmer with his passing.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile

First of all let me say to Marvin
family. Stay strong for your husband, dad, grandfather was a strong and powerful man. He has helped so many people in this world. I would love to see a holiday be set forth to honor him in his great works for many people. Marvin displayed a gift from God above. HE WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. I can remember when he came to LaGrange to expose the Chicken Ranch. My mother and I was on the town square and saw so many people with cameras. We had never seen that much action in that small town. When I saw the report on the news. He did something others was unable to do. Later I had a pleasure of seeing him while modeling on channel 13 for Mayo Hill Modeling Agency. He have inspired me to help others as well.
May God Bless his family. We thank you all for allowing the public to attend his services. This has helped myself and others to deal with his loss. Hold your head up knowing he was a good person on this earth..
God has an angel...Marvin Zindler

To Mrs. Marvin Zindler,
The Zindler Children & Grandchildren,

I can only imagine the pain you are feeling with the loss of Mr. Zindler. Please know that the entire city of Houston feels that same pain. Our Heavenly Father will ease that pain, and his word assures us of that. Earth has no sorrow that heaven can not heal. So knowing that Marvin is now safely in the Master's arms comforts us until we can see him again. Thank you, to each of you, for sharing such a wonderful, compassionate and caring man with our great city. May God's blessings and peace be with you always.

With sincere respect and sympathy,

August 3, 2007

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

My thoughts and prayers go out to The Zindler family. I grew up watching Marvin and he was good at what he did. I did not know him personally, but I do know he was a good person and he will truly be missed. I remember seeing Marvin in his hospital bed doing the rat and roach on the news one Friday night and I said Marvin is a dedicated in employee who loves what he does. I will tell you this he is a tough act to follow and I can't imagine anyone telling me which placing not to eat at like Marvin would. May God continue to bless you and we will keep you in our prayers.

I offer my sincere condolences to The Zindler Family and Friends. I was a young teen in the 70's who started watching Marvin Zindler at first because my mom was an avid watcher. After my mom passed away, I watched because I was now a fan. My paternal family is from La Grange, TX... so after that Chicken Ranch ordeal, I could not imagine missing Marvin Zindler on the news. I also had my opportunity to write Marvin regarding a consumer conflict in 1984. I had not been able to get my problem solved, but after Marvin mailed his standard format letter to the Retailer... they resolved my problem immediately and for that I was very thankful. I will miss Marvin Zindler's trademark image and all the good that he did in the community. There will never be another like him. So take comfort in the fact that he left a legacy of excellence. I hope that all the wonderful memories from his very full and long life will sustain the family. Hopefully all the wonderful guest book entries will have a demulcent effect on the family during this time of bereavement. God bless you all.

We will truly miss the man the legend. He was an icon and we loved to watch him every night when we lived in Texas. When we left Texas he was part of what we missed. I had the pleasure meeting him a couple of times. Once at Wolfgang Pucks grand opening. He will be missed by all across the country.
