Zachary Sieben Obituary

Resident of Piedmont Zachary P. Sieben, 19, died peacefully in his sleep on February 10, 2009, of complications from an undiagnosed heart condition. A 2007 graduate of Piedmont High School, he was a sophomore at Berea College in Berea, KY, majoring in nursing and minoring in environmental sustainability. He had a sincere love for the environment, manifested by his avid interest in backpacking and bicycling as well as his decision to reside at Berea College's Ecovillage, dormitory apartments designed to maximize sustainability and minimize waste through solar energy, recycling, and wastewater treatment. He was excited to have been selected as a Kentucky delegate to PowerShift 2009. Support his passions by visiting powershift09.org. He is survived by his parents, Gregory Sieben and Susan Haas of Piedmont; two younger sisters, Alexandra and Taylor; his maternal grandmother of Arkansas, his paternal grandparents of New Jersey, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. A memorial will be held at the Piedmont Veterans Hall, 401 Highland Avenue, Piedmont, on Saturday, February 21, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Berea College in his name.

I knew Zach very little, as a friend of a friend, but there was never a time when he did not smile as he walked by. He had such a sweet and pure spirit. Even though he did not have the opportunity complete the change he had set in motion at Berea and beyond, he changed me. I have always lived my life they way others want me to and have never had the courage to stand up for what i believe. That is going to change because of the light i saw in Zach.
To have been so young and so full of compassion and wisdom is truly a blessing.

Thank you Zach.

Zack was an amazing and inspiring young man. He was smart, witty, easy-going, and active in everything he cared about.

His involvement in numerous extra-curricular activities and causes while also being a nursing major (one of the most rigorous academic programs at Berea) was a testament to his intellect, stamina, and commitment.

He touched so many lives here in a short time. He will be missed and remembered fondly. My heart goes out to his family and friends.
