Clifford Glasgow Obituary

Lt. Col. Clifford Wayne Glasgow Aug 20, 1912 - Sep 2, 2010 Oakland Resident Lt. Col. Clifford Wayne Glasgow, a retired Army reservist, passed away on Thursday after a long decline due to old age. Born in Richards, Baca County, Colorado, to Bert Raymond Glasgow and Lillie Dell Nickell, he was the oldest of four children growing up on a farm on the high plains of Colorado. After graduating from Walsh (CO) High School in 1930, he held a variety of jobs before coming to California in 1935 and working for Hertz Drive-Ur-Self. He returned to Colorado for two years when he was asked to work as Assistant Baca County Treasurer, but he missed California and returned to San Diego. Drafted in Feb. 1941, he trained at Ft Lewis, Washington, but was mustered out Dec. 1, 1941, because he was over draft age due to a change in the law. Six days later Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, but he wasn't recalled until March. After attending Officer Candidate School, he was commissioned in the Medical Corps. He often joked he was given this assignment because he had worked for "Dr. Pepper." Clifford met his future wife, Margaret Ella Shimp, when both were stationed at the Regional Hospital, Camp Bowie, Brownwood, Texas. They married Sep. 8, 1945, and returned to San Diego in 1946. Clifford owned The Spirits Shop, a retail liquor store in Hillcrest, San Diego. When the Korean War began he sold the store, believing, as a reservist, he would be called up again. In the interim he took a "short term job" with Convair (later purchased by General Dynamics Corp), in the Material Sales Department. Since the call to Korea never came, his sales representative job became a full time career until he retired in 1977 at the age of 65. Clifford and Margaret were members of First Presbyterian Church, San Diego, where they made lifelong friends with whom they often traveled internationally. Clifford always enjoyed working in his garage, gardening, cooking, traveling, and the company of good friends. After Margaret died in May 2002, Clifford moved to Oakland, to be near his daughter Janet and her family. He resided at Salem Lutheran Home in Oakland beginning in December 2002. Clifford is survived by daughters Carol Frazer (Bruce) and Janet Mulshine (Dennis), grandsons Timothy and Patrick Mulshine, sister Lois Blair (Martin), and nieces and nephews. There will be a memorial service at Salem Lutheran Home and inurnment at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego.
