Dorothy Cunningham Obituary

Dorothy A. Cunningham Apr. 27, 1925- Sept. 12, 2010 Resident of Hayward Dorothy "Netta" Annetta Cunningham (Elrod) was born April 27, 1925, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, to Margaret Lucille and Isaac Jewell Elrod. She entered into Heaven peacefully on Sept. 12, 2010, surrounded at home by her loving family. Annetta attended nursing school in Greenville, Mississippi, where she met a young Army Air Corpsman, Robert Cunningham, whom she married in 1946. They joined his family in California where she worked briefly as an RN for Sunshine Biscuits before starting her lifelong career as a loving mother to eight children. She was a lifetime member of PTA and one of the founding members of St. Joachim Parish in Hayward. She also worked at Fairmont Hospital and volunteered with Kaiser Hospice. She enjoyed dancing, bowling, sewing, needlecrafts, Mr. & Mrs. Club, the St. Joachim Seniors Club, her swimming exercise group, and especially her getaway weekend trips with her girls. Her nurturing spirit and beautiful nature will always be remembered and cherished by Robert, her beloved husband of 64 years and her adoring children: Pat (Tina), Linda (Barry), Christy (Bill), Nancy (Jim), Mary (Jeff), Terry (Guy), Jewel, and daughter-in-law Laurette; also by her grandchildren: Sean, Maggie, Francesca, William, Jeff, Lauren, Jonathan, Jim, Jill, Michael, Christopher, Robby, Michele, Danny, Autumn; and great-grandchildren: David, Sarah, Ashley, Jack, Alexa, and Jimmy. Netta was predeceased by her son Bob and her grandson Monte. Words cannot express how much we will miss the "Matriarch" of the Cunningham family. Services: Thursday, Sept. 16 at Holy Angels Funeral Center 1051 Harder Rd. Hayward - Visitation 5-7 PM, Vigil Service 7PM. Friday, Sept. 17 at St. Joachim Church 21250 Hesperian Blvd. Hayward- Celebratory Mass 10:30 AM. (Interment will take place at a later date). What a great and patient lady! Raising all those children was no easy chore. I started hanging around the Cunningham household when I was 13 - only 43 years ago. Netta always frightened me - just a bit. I know now it was just an act . She just had to keep a tight reign on the house and all its inhabitants. We'll all miss her very much and my heart goes out to all remaining family members especially my dear friend, Mary. Love you all.
