Nicholas Xavier Vulpi

Nicholas Xavier Vulpi Sept. 30, 1916 - Sept. 27, 2010 Resident of Newark After battling cancer for several months Nick Vulpi passed away quietly on Monday September 27th at his home in Newark. He was 93 years old. Nick was born in Manhattan on September 30, 1916, the fourth of six children born of Joseph and Maria (Cirillo) Vulpi, both immigrants from Italy in early 1900. He was a veteran of WWII, serving as Radioman First Class and a member of VPB 52 (the Black Cats), an Air Patrol Bomb Squadron which operated in both the Atlantic and Pacific. Nick was in the Pacific and obtained back injuries in September 1945 and was transported to Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland. Upon being discharged he decided to stay in California, served in the Naval Reserve, and retired after 27 years. Nick worked for Swift and Company in New York prior to entering the service and obtained a position as plant manager for their plant in San Francisco and later for Rainbo Distributors in Oakland. Nick and his family moved to Newark where he was active in many community events, elections, as well as serving as Marketing Representative for the Newark Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of St. Edwards and St. Annes Catholic Churches where he served for several years on their annual festivals, drove the school bus, served as an usher and was a member of the Holy Name Society. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and wife, Ernestine. He is survived by his wife Lois, his daughter Catherine (Curtis) Staib and step-children Yvonne Niswonger, Evelyn Hannasch, Cynthia Johnson-Hoying, Mary Ellen Seeley and Robert Johnson. He will be greatly missed by his grandson, Nicholas Staib and Brandon, Joe and Christopher Hannasch, Rebecca Waters, Elizabeth Krauss, April and Amber Seeley and Christina, Joanna and Anne Marie Johnson and six great grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at Fremont Memorial Chapel, 3723 Peralta Blvd., Fremont at 3:00 PM on Saturday, October 2, 2010. An inurnment will be held at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Lansing, MI, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to Pathways Hospice Foundation, 585 N.
