Douglas Payne Obituary

Douglas Rutledge Payne July 17, 1920 - Oct. 3, 2010 Long-time Alameda Resident Douglas Payne died on Sunday, October 3, 2010, at Brandel Manor Skilled Nursing Facility in Turlock, California. A private Inurnment Service for immediate family was held at Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland, CA. Mr. Payne was born July 17, 1920, in Clearwater, Nebraska, to Clyde and Zada Payne. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was stationed at the Alameda Naval Air Station. While stationed there in 1947, he married his sweetheart, Sarah Catherine Fitzpatrick, who was from Norfolk, Nebraska. After leaving the Navy, Douglas and Sarah enjoyed Alameda so much that they decided to stay and raise their five children there. Mr. Payne spent almost 50 years working for Nunn Bush shoes. Besides staying busy raising five children, he was actively involved with the Alameda Swim Team, of which he was a past president. He and his family enjoyed vacation times at the beach at Pajaro Dunes in Monterey County, as well as in the mountains at Twain Harte, California. In his retirement years, he enjoyed working as a door man and ticket taker for Hoss Services, working at such venues around the Bay Area as the Paramount Theater, Berkeley Community Theater, and Oakland Auditorium. An avid fan of Cal football and the Cal Marching Band, Mr. Payne was also a lifelong supporter of the San Francisco 49ers, attending games at the old Kezar Stadium. He additionally was an old movie buff, and would amaze his family with his recall of facts about most movies from the 1940s and 1950s. Mr. Payne was a long-time member of Community of Christ Church in Berkeley and Modesto, California. He is survived by his son Steve Payne (wife, Janet) of Hughson, CA; daughter Cathy Payne (husband, Rick Rhode) of Rapid City, SD; son Stewart Payne (wife, Kay) of St. Petersburg, FL; and son Andy Payne of Alameda, CA. He has one brother Don Payne (wife, Georgia) of Lincoln, NE, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife Sarah and his daughter Victoria. Donations can be made in the name of Douglas Payne to Community of Christ Church, c/o Bill Wilson, 340 Sunbird Drive, Turlock, CA 95382.

I'll always cherish my memories of Mr. Payne; he was an exceptionally kind, jovial, and gracious man.

In the late 1990’s, I met Mr. Payne through his daughter Cathy, my closest friend. Once introduced, he always opened his home and kitchen to me when Cathy and I would visit him. We would often stop at the shop around the corner from his house in order to pick up some hot dogs, as well as other treats that Mr. Payne loved. Our time was always full of laughs and wonderful stories. Once, as a treat, he took us to Paragon’s at the Claremont Hotel for dinner. I was truly honored to be treated so well; he always made me feel like family.

I count myself fortunate to have known Mr. Payne. His legacy lives on through his children who share his boundless positive energy and kindness of spirit.

Mr. Payne, you are truly missed.
