Clifford DeWitt Wingfield

Clifford DeWitt Wingfield May 23, 1923 - Nov. 15, 2010 Resident of Dublin, CA Cliff passed away peacefully in his home in Dublin, California on November 15. He was born to Oscar and Ina Wingfield in Estancia, New Mexico in 1923 and moved with his family to Merced, California in 1930. After completing Merced High School, Cliff enlisted in the US Navy, serving with the Seabees in WWII from 1942-1945. Shortly after his discharge Cliff married his sweetheart Irene Marie Geraghty on February 10, 1946 in New York City and they travelled to California to make their home. Cliff began working with Del Monte Corporation alongside his father and two brothers, and worked for many years with Del Monte in the SF Bay Area, Puerto Rico and Kenya until his retirement in 1985. His proudest work accomplishment was the construction of the Kenya Canners pineapple cannery in Thika, Kenya. Cliff was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather and a respected and admired friend of many. He was always eager to lend a hand with any project, quick with a dinner invitation and a life-long outdoorsman with great fishing and hunting stories (some exaggerated!). Cliff is survived by his wife of 64 years Irene Wingfield; daughters Diane Savage (Annette), Maureen Klausner (Karl) and Gayle Petri; grandchildren Dan Savage, Colin Klausner and Meredith Westlund (Jon); Neil, Stephanie & Joel Petri; and great-granddaughter Ellie Westlund. Also survived by his siblings Herbert Wingfield, Wendell Wingfield and Polly Schmidt and many loving nieces and nephews. Friends may visit Wednesday, November 17 after 4 p.m. at the Jess C. Spencer Mortuary in Castro Valley and are invited to attend a prayer service there at 7 p.m. A graveside burial service will be conducted at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery at 11 a.m. on November 18.
