Donald Martin Obituary

Donald Martin July 9, 1933 - Nov. 11, 2010 Resident of Castro Valley Beloved father, mentor, husband, inventor, treasure hunter, union member, and hero, made his transition to his next life in the early morning hours of Veteran's Day; only too poetic for a man so very proud of his service. Known as "Donnie," "Marty," or "Martin" as a youth, simply "Don" as he matured, Mr. Martin rose to the aid of his family early, working at a local grocery at 8 years old. He attended Hayward High and enlisted first into the Navy, and then the Army in 1953, only months before the Korean War armistice. Traveling through Asia, he eventually taught skiing and mountain climbing in Japan. As a depression era child, Don was never afraid of work and went right to it, caring for two families at times. His heroism went beyond the hypothetical: he literally saved the lives of 5 people, on separate occasions, including his own father. Don has had an eclectic professional life, holding jobs with San Francisco Federal, Lockeed-Martin, and various construction and cement companies. An avid treasure hunter and local history aficionado, he spent many weekends with his metal detector and gold panning equipment in the back-roads of Northern California, and eventually opened his own store, Martin's Treasure Chest, in Castro Valley. His personal ethics were unparalleled, even when he felt sometimes that nice guys finish last. Don carried a lifelong respect for the Salvation Army, and he taught his children that same value of charity. He spent his life giving back to the planet, donating his time, money, or even delivering turkeys at Thanksgiving to others in need. Mr. Martin claimed to be simple and not an overly educated man, yet his feats of engineering as a contractor or his prototypes of toys and games he invented say otherwise. Despite his concern of what kind of legacy he might leave, Donald Anthony Martin has left a wealth of untold riches for those he's left behind: his wife of many years, Eryka, his daughters Jeannie and Christine, his sons Dominic, Daniel, and Demetrius, Mark and the late Douglas Martin, as well as grandchildren Zachariah, Martin, Angelle, Chad, and Chazlyn, great-grandchildren, sisters Dorothy Urdiales and Collette Morris, and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Jess C. Spencer Mortuary 21228 Redwood Rd. in Castro Valley on Monday, November 22, at 6 PM with a vigil service at 7PM. Funeral services at All Saints Catholic Church, 22824 2nd St., Hayward, November 23, at 10:30 AM. Jess C. Spencer Mortuary & Crematory (510) 581-9133

I hope you had a great birthday, Dad. I would like to give you a present, that wasn't store-bought: love, light, and gratitude. I'm glad you taught me how to have standards and to fight for what you believe.

It's been one month today that you left us. I can not believe that this is real it can't be, I wait for you to come through the door at any moment. I dream that you are coming home even.

If I allow myself to contemplate reality it is more than I can bear. I am not ready for reality ---my heart aches so; I am just broken. Today is a very difficult one, you are in my thought my heart and soul. Oh god how I miss you. Please forgive my selfishness I know you are in a better place where there is no pain. I just want to let you know how much you are loved

In the loss of your Father, our Friend, the hero. He was your Dad, our friend. He shaped who you are... gave you his love...taught you what he knew... You'll always honor him in the way you live your life and in your heart with your lasting memories.
I personally loved the greatest gift he gave my Dad. He was his soul mate, his brother, his best friend. I truly loved this bond between the the both of them. I valued the long term relationship they have. They are together in the Heavens. I know now that heavens are not the same with these two characters amongst them. Are they stealing all of the attention? Probally!!! Much love for all of you Eryka, Jeannie, Christine, Dominic, Danny, Demetrius, Mark and the rest of the Martin Clan. So very sorry to have heard of the loss. I have such respect for your father because of the love he has for our Father, Manuel. Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with you during this time.

To the Martin family,

I hope that you and your family will find peace and comfort in knowing that his suffering is over and that his just rewards await him.

May God bless you and your wonderful family.

Karim

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

I would like to send my deepest condolences to the Martin Family, I sorry that I was unable to make it but I was there in thought and heart. Don you were very much loved and will be sorely missed. I will always remember you as Daddy Don, thats what I called you when I was little, and that warm and gentle SMILE.
May you rest in Peace, I only have 1 request, that you give DOUG a big Hug from his little sister, and tell him I love and miss him too. We'll see you again someday. GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS

So sorry to hear about Don's passing. I will miss his smile and not being able to tease him that his truck needs cleaning as I walk by his house.

Dad was also a great musician, playing both the vibes and the piano in his time, thanks to his Aunt who had been his musical influence.
