William Gaylord Obituary

William Gaylord Resident of Castro Valley Bill passed away Nov. 29th at home surrounded by his family. In his 85 years he experienced life to the fullest. In his last few days he expressed that he has had a great life and no regrets except for not winning the lottery. For 61 years he was a loving husband to Jean who passed in 2008. He was a devoted father to daughters Laura, Leslie, Wendy and Vicky and the beloved grandfather of 9 and great grandfather to 6. He was born and raised in San Francisco a city he loved to share stories about. He went to Balboa High, San Francisco City College and only left the city to finish his degree at Cal Berkeley. He always liked watching the Cal-Stanford game each year. He had a 30 year career with Alameda County as a probation officer helping turn lives around. He was a proud Navy veteran serving in both WWII and Korea. He loved being at sea. For over 50 years he has shared that interest as the dedicated Skipper of the Sea Scout Ship Makai and has been a mentor to many young men. In recent years he enjoyed being a docent for the San Francisco Maritime Museum and the U.S.S. Hornet Museum.Bill and Jean made Starr King Unitarian Universalist their church home for more than 50 years. They were some of the founding members and have many dear friends there. A memorial service in celebration of his life will take place there on December 18th at 1 o'clock in the afternoon. 22577 Bayview Avenue Hayward, CA.
