Genoveva Cabral Obituary

Genoveva Vargas Cabral Nov. 2, 1913 - Dec. 24, 2010 Resident of Oakland Genoveva Cabral, 98, a long time resident of Oakland passed away on December 24, 2010. Genoveva was born in Zacatecas, Mexico and served as the beloved matriarch of an extended network of families who came to the United States to seek employment and a better way of life. She worked as a farm worker, cannery worker and retired after many years of employment at Mi Rancho Market in downtown Oakland. She was very proud of her East Oakland home where she enjoyed cooking, gardening, and loved to crochet baby blankets and sweaters for her large extended family. Her home also served as a shelter for new arrivals to this country. She loved to travel and spoke fondly of her trips to Europe, Israel, Egypt and her beloved Zacatecas. She was preceded in death by daughter Josie Vargas Bueno (Felipe) and son Rudy Vargas (Sylvia.) Fondly referred to as "Geno," she will be greatly missed by her surviving sons Manuel Aquino (Rita), a retired Oakland Policeman, and Louis Aquino (Irene) and her daughter Camille Coto (Joe). She will also be greatly missed by her 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren who lovingly called her "Spanish Nana." She will always be remembered for her marvelous stories, humor, and quick wit. Friends and family are invited to celebrate her life on Tuesday, December 28th at 5 pm (rosary at 7 pm) at Graham-Hitch Mortuary, at 4167 First Street, Pleasanton (925) 846-5624. A Rosary will also be held at St. John Vianney Church on Thursday, December 30th at 5 pm, rosary at 7pm at 1345 Turnbull Canyon Road, Hacienda Heights, CA (626) 330-2269. A Mass will follow on Friday, December 31st at 9 am at St. John Vianney Church, followed by the interment at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, CA. Jess C.
