Maria Sutherland-Yanez Obituary

Maria De Jesus Sutherland/Yanez Jan. 15, 1918 - Dec. 23, 2010 Resident of Oakand Maria De Jesus Sutherland/Yanez passed away on Thursday after a long full life from natural causes. An intelligent woman of simple means who enjoyed nature in all its forms, she will be remembered for her unwavering values, un-biased generosity, and immense love and compassion for her family. Maria was born in the small town of Amaclan De Las Canas, near Guadalajara, Mexico. She was married to Marcos Yanez and immigrated to the United States in 1947 to begin a new life. She and Marcos settled in Oakland, California where they began building a life and raising seven children together. Her marriage to Marcos ended after 24 years when Marcos passed away in April, 1964. Maria later remarried Edward Sutherland in December, 1967, in which they enjoyed 10 years together before Edward passed away in 1976. Maria's life, though simple in nature, was full of many accomplishments that centered on supporting and building her families ties through the passing of many traditions. She worked for over 25 years at Del Monte in Oakland, California. She spent many hours of her days doing what she loved most; gardening and cooking. She loved to be outdoors spending time in her gardens tending to her fish pond, but mostly enjoyed sharing her family's cooking and recipe secrets with her daughters, granddaughters, and great grandchildren. As a devoted Catholic, she educated her seven children at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Parish in Oakland, California. Maria is survived by her sons Anthony and his wife Darlene Yanez, George Yanez, Gilberto Yanez, and Federico Yanez, her daughters Carolina Mejia and Hilda Vasquez. She is also survived by her brother Solome Duenas, grandchildren; DeAnn, Eric, Mario, Maria, Cristina, Sofia, Johnny, Teresa, Ignacio, Rosa, Ruben, and Ashlee. Finally, her great grandchildren include; Amado, Veronica, Alexander, Maritza, Mercedes, Alexus, Andrew, Cassandra, David, and Olivia. Maria's loving and vibrant spirit will be missed; however, she has moved on to join her loving daughter Alicia Baros, granddaughter Debra Yanez, her husband, as well as family and friends.
