Gerald Bancroft Obituary

Gerald C. Bancroft Jr. (Butch), 57, passed away unexpectedly on March 8, 2008.

Jerry was born in Hartford, the son of Ruth (Pomeroy) Bancroft of East Windsor, and the late Gerald C. Bancroft Sr. He was a longtime resident of East Windsor until moving to South Windsor in the 1980's. Gerald graduated from East Windsor High School in 1968. Jerry was a retired Bradley International Airport Firefighter and Paramedic having served for approximately 25 years. He dedicated his life to helping others in their times of need and crisis. He was so proud when both of his sons followed in his footsteps and became firefighters in the City of Hartford. He was a retired lieutenant and honorary member of the Broad Brook Fire Department in Broad Brook. Jerry was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and every summer he took annual fishing trips to upstate New York with Dennis and the boys. He looked forward to every summer when he and Donna would spend many weeks relaxing in Pecks Islands, Maine. In recent years, he enjoyed taking photographs of all his family and friends. Jerry was a loving son, father and grandfather and he will be missed, loved and remembered by so many for his big smile and loud laugh.

Jerry is survived by his proudest achievements, his two sons, Gerald C. Bancroft III and his wife, Amy, James R. Bancroft and his wife, Jaime of Broad Brook; his long time love and fiancée, Donna Healy of South Windsor; one of Jerry's greatest joys was being a proud grandfather to his only granddaughter, Allison Bancroft; his uncle, Fred Pomeroy of East Windsor. He enjoyed every minute with his family which included many aunts, uncles and cousins. His loving extended family included his "brothers" Dennis Soucy, Jack Rauschenbach and Richard Pippin of Broad Brook, James Shea of Windsor and Richard Pardi of Florida.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 13 at 10 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of East Windsor, 124 Scantic Rd. Committal will follow in Scantic Cemetery.

Family and friends may gather on Wednesday evening, March 12 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Bassinger & Dowd Funeral Home, 37 Gardner St., East Windsor.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jerry's memory donations can be made to The Broad Brook Fire Department, 125 Main St., Broad Brook, CT 06016.

Jimmy, Gerry:
I am sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. I have many fond memories of our years together running calls in Suffield and the area. I am sure many others remember those days as well. He was on many of my firsts in EMS. He was always in a good mood and willing to share his knowledge and love for the job. He will be greatly missed. You are all in my prayers.

I am so sorry for the loss of such a wonderful person that was highly respected by all. Everyone should cherish the memories that you've shared with him, and embrace the people you hold close. Even in this time of sorrow, you should rely on the fact that he is not in pain and he is looking down on the people he held dear to his heart. My deepest regrets to the Bancroft Family.

Dear Mrs. Bancroft,
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your son. Jerry spoke of you often and loved you very much. He was astonished at how long you continued to drive to Florida every year!! Jerry was a very giving and kind man. I hope that your memories of him will help you in your time of grief.

Hi Ali. I am sorry to hear that Papa has gone to heaven. The Christmas picture Papa sent me with you and him is very nice. If you look at your picture with him every day, then I’m sure it will help you to remember him and the fun times you had with him. He loved you very very much. I know that because he told me all the time. May God and Papa watch over you from heaven.

Jerry and Amy / Jim and Jaime:
I am absolutely heartbroken over the loss of your father and can’t fathom the grief that you must feel. I have been an Internet friend of your father for the last 10 years or so. He has gotten me through some pretty rough times with my kids as teenagers. He taught me never to give up on them like so many others told me to do. If more than a couple of days went by without an email or at least a forwarded joke, I knew something was wrong. He was very proud of all four of you as he told me frequently. He couldn’t email the ‘boys’ graduation pictures quickly enough when you both graduated…. when Jaime became a cop!!! when Ali was born….. Your father talked about all of you a lot. Please accept my sincere sympathy of your loss. He will be missed so much.

Aunt Ruth,
Please accept my very deepest sympathy at this time. Needless to say I was as stunned as everyone else. I can still remember all the times we came to your house before school to walk to the bus stop at the church with Jerry and Nancy. I can still recall how many "toys" Jerry had compared to Nancy and myself. We always said how lucky he was and each time his response was he would trade all his toys for a brother or sister. I can even remember when Jerry had a dance for his birthday (teenage years) at your home and I attended and it was great~~~

Having an only son myself I can only imagine the grief that you are feeling at this time and forever. You are in my prayers.

Love,
Jane

I have fond memories of working with Gerry for several years at the BIAFD. That was at a very different time... when the Paramedics would go off the airport regularly and worked closely with all of the area ambulance services. Gerry was very popular with EMT's from those services because he was a very gentle man and a very competent Paramedic. Gerry was in that first group of Paramedics that really were trailblazers in EMS north of Hartford.

May God always bless Gerry and his family...

To the Bancroft family,
Please accept my heartfelt sympathy over the loss of your Dad and son. We had been friends for years, sharing emails and our love of our families. My son is also a firefighter and your Dad was always there to reassure me that he was well trained, knew what he was doing and therefore safe. I had talked to him on line last week and knew the "RA was kicking his butt again" but being who he was he always had a funny line and a wish for me to have a good day and to stay safe. There is a deep saddness knowing Jerryarff will not be on line anymore, oh how I will miss him. You are in my prayers,
Sincerely Lynn Macdonald

I had the pleasure to work with Gerry for my entire career at Bradley. I am fortunate to have known such a kind, caring and compassionate man. I will sorely miss the "Care Bear" medic of Bradley. Jim and Ger were always refered to as "the Care Bears". It was the many numerous good memories at Bradley that brought smiles to many of us who worked with him. Our deepest sympathy to the entire family. Gregory "Big Al" Stiles and Carol L. Stiles.

I work with Amy Bancroft. To her and Gerry and all the Bancroft family. I express my sincere regrets for your loss. Having lost my father early in life, I know the grief you can feel. Time does help heal the emptyness, but the best thing you can do is keep his memory and good times you have had with him deep in your heart, and love him forever. It helps to heal the feeling of loss.

Jerry and I lost contact a few years after I and my family moved to New Zealand. A few years ago, my stepsister looked him up for me and we have been in contact ever since. I feel such deep sorrow over his untimely death, and wish to convey my love and sympathy to his family. I will miss our email conversations and my one regret is that having swapped telephone numbers last month we didn't get to talk to each other on the phone. I would love to hear from any of his family, if you would like to contact me.
I love you Jer, and will miss you heaps.

I am so saddened by Jerry's death words are difficult to find. I cannot imagine the depth of your feelings of loss as I can barely grasp my own. I shall miss his honesty and warmth, the cheer and love. Though we never "met" in person, we've been friends for a long time. He truly was the "big brother" I never had. We chatted almost daily and had Cubis duels for some 13 years. He was there for me through some very troubled waters in my life. I was blessed to have Jerry as a friend and will miss him dearly.
