She was born in Smedjebacken, Sweden on March 9, 1920 to Carl Emil Peterson and Agnes Sophia (Sjoblom) Peterson and came to the United States at the age of two. She was married to Carl H. Gustafson, Jr. (1917 - 1995). She is survived by two sons, Wayne E. Gustafson and wife, Phebe, of Ithaca, NY and Ronald C. Gustafson and wife, Joan, of Kalamazoo, MI; three grandchildren, Scott R. Gustafson, and wife, Cheryl, of Gulf Breeze, FL, Haley J. Gustafson, and fiancé, Chaston Querbach, of Grand Rapids, MI, and Luke A. Gustafson of Ithaca, NY; two step-great-granddaughters, Brittany and Raina Jackson of Gulf Breeze, FL. She was predeceased by a brother, O. Eric Peterson of Hyannis, MA. Stina was a lifetime church musician who in her teens began playing piano for the Quinsigamond Corp of the Swedish Salvation Army in Worcester, MA. She began playing organ in the early '60's at Chaffin Congregational Church, Holden, MA and continued her career as organist and choir director until her retirement at age 85! She had a great love for learning and she received her Associates Degree from Cape Cod Community College at the age of 72. A characteristic statement about her ministry of music comes from the history of St. Francis Episcopal Church in Holden, MA where Stina was organist and choir director for many years: "Stina loved music and she loved working with people who love music. In addition to her work with the regular choirs, she organized a singing group just for fun and recreation. This became a project for three churches and they originally presented an Epiphany concert… Stina also developed a 'training choir' for children who then moved to the junior choir, which sang regularly at a family service. Some were around long enough to lend their voices to the senior choir. Stina Gustafson continued as our organist and choir director (until 1986, when she and Carl moved to Cape Cod.) Her enthusiasm spilled over into the quality of congregational singing. It was always a joyful thing to sing praises unto the Lord." On Cape Cod, Stina played and directed the choirs at the Harwich United Methodist Church for 18 years until her retirement at age 85. Since moving to Portage, MI in 2005, the music at St. Luke's Episcopal Church has enriched her last years. She was a long time member of the American Guild of Organists and the Swedish Vasa Order of America Lodge. A Memorial Service in celebration of her life will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 247 W. Lovell St., Kalamazoo, MI 49007 at 11:00 AM, on Monday, February 2, 2009, with The Rev. Beth McLaren officiating. A time of fellowship will follow the service. Her cremains will be interred with her husband's at the National Cemetery in Bourne, MA. Memorial gifts in her memory may be made to any Salvation Army Corp or the Choristers Fund of St. Luke's Episcopal Church.

Geographically the distance between Sweden and the US is very long. As a very little girl Stina moved all that way with her swedish parents. She became an American as well as my aunt and uncle. I never got to meet my fathers oldest brother Emil, but I got to meet Stina and Carl when they came to visit Sweden on two occasions. It was so exciting to meet a relative from the great country in the west. My cousin Stina was very involved and interested in us and her background in Smedjebacken. When she played the organ in our church I remember that my father (her yougest uncle) was touched to tears. Time goes on and the distance is far. Stina has now left this life and made en even longer journey. We send a last greeting to Stina. Rest in peace. Marie och Johanna Bjerndal, Sverige.

We got to know our cousin Stina when we visited Carl and Stina in their hospitable home on Cape Cod 1988. It was a strange experience when we arrived and she met us at the door. She looked so much like our mutual grandmother and several of our unkles at home in Sweden. We felt connected. With the same origin and background in the small industrial community of Smedjebacken in Sweden we have lived our lives on such a geografically long distance. Still there was the similarity and the close ness.
Rest in peace, Stina.
From your cousins Vera and Kristina in Smedjebacken.

It was my pleasure to sing in the choir at the Harwich United Methodist Church under Stina's direction. She taught me so much about music and the appreciation of it. My condolences to everyone.

We met Stina while tracing Gustafson family history, and had the opportunity to visit her on the Cape and again in Michigan. Words just can’t express how glad we are to have known and loved her. She was so proud of her family and her Swedish heritage. She showed so much pride showing us around the Harwich United Methodist Church and playing the old organ for us. Stina’s love of people was evident by the hospitality she extended. Music was in every fiber of her being. It’s comforting to know Carl & Stina are now listening to heavenly music together.

We first met Stina shortly after we moved to Cape Cod in 2000, and our friendship grew and deepened over the years. She was a seasoned fellow organist, valued colleague, teller of tales, and fabulous hostess at parties small and large. We treasure memories of our car trip with Stina to Chicago to attend the 2004 AGO National Convention. Nothing could hold her down as she made new friends with everyone from renowned recitalists to bartenders. What fun we had! We are also so thankful that we were able to visit her and her wonderful family last fall in Michigan as we were enroute to our new home in California. Weaker in body but indomitable in spirit, her zest for living and unforgettable laugh put us tired travelers to shame. Rest in peace, dear friend.

Stina will forever be in our hearts. I have such wonderful memories of growing up on Montana Drive with "Uncle Carl and Aunt Stina". My mother has lost a true Swedish friend, which she always kept close to her heart. I will forever hear their laughter ringing out loud and clear. Our sympathies go out to all of you.

Stina loved to share her music with others and many have been the recipient of her sharing. She also loved to hostess parties which were always fun to be at - especially on Christmas Eve. Another passion she had was playing cards which we did often! We always knew we were welcome in her house - she will be greatly missed as is Carl. Love and prayers, Carol and Ardie.

We haven't known Stina for very long (relative to others who have signed this guestbook). We, however, believe that she was and still remains an inspiration to us: an inspiration of kindness, love and mostly of fire! It was a pleasure knowing Stina and, through her, the rest of the Gustafson family. Our prayers go out to them!

Stina and Carl were a second family to ours. Holidays were always more special, shared with Gustafsons. Stina achieved a great deal in the latter part of her life and I admire her for that. She shared her love for Sweden with me.We were so pleased that she could be here for Amy's wedding. The 3 of us shared the same birthday! We will miss her.

Sad news but nothing but wonderful memories of growing up next to the Gustafson's. Life is a journey and Stina, and Carl too, have been a big part of mine! Joe envies my good memories of Montana Drive.
