Mary Gertrude Herbert

Herbert, Mary Gertrude, age 93, passed away Jan. 14, 2008. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Edwin and Mary Gertrude Grubb, husband, Douglas Herbert, brothers, George, Richard, Jack and Daniel; sister, Elizabeth Hiebert, and infant twins, John and Joan. She is survived by her sister, Edna Toews, Inman, KS; brother, James Grubb, Washington, D.C.; daughters, Diana Warner and Billie Schroeder, Lincoln, NE, Sylvia (Darrel) Steinshouer and Christine Spreier, Wichita; son Charles (Cheryl), Overland Park, KS; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Mary was born in Osborne, KS, April 16, 1914. She grew up in Marion, KS and graduated from Marion High School in 1931. Mary and Doug were married, May 27, 1934. They lived in Marion until 1952 and then moved to Wichita where she worked as a drug store manager, and he as manager at Berry's Sunflower Hatchery. In 1966, Doug and Mary moved to a farm near Rose Hill, KS, where they raised and sold vegetables for the next 25 years. In 1992, they returned to Wichita. After her husband's death in 1998, Mary moved to the Kansas Masonic Home where she remained active, enjoying swimming, church activities and traveling abroad. She was a lifelong member of Eastern Star. Mary always had a cheerful smile and will be dearly missed. Visitation will be 1-8pm Tuesday, Culbertson-Smith Mortuary, 115 S. Seneca.
