Janice E. Lockhart Gunn

Janice Gunn Obituary

Janice E. Lockhart Gunn, 62, died Friday, July 11, at her home in Kansas City, North. She was born in Carthage, Mo., to George and Louise (Whitaker) Lockhart. Her father, a teacher, coach and administrator, and the family moved from one small town to another across Missouri following his profession. They eventually ended up in Platte City where she graduated from high school. While in high school she was a candidate for homecoming queen, a cheerleader, a majorette and played shortstop on the girl's softball team. After graduating from high school, she had several different jobs and ended up working for E.J. Ross, a prominent employment agency in Kansas City. Eventually she purchased that company. She and her husband, Michael, were married in July 1981; she retired from E.J. Ross in 1982, shortly before the first of her three children was born. In 1996, she opened Home Embellishments, a contemporary local art shop in Parkville, and was instrumental in the resurgence of historical downtown Parkville. While living at Weatherby Lake, Jan was involved in a great number of community activities. She was a dedicated volunteer at Renner Elementary School and Plaza Middle School, as well as in the Junior Sailing program at the Lake. She also served on the Weatherby Lake Board of Alderman and was an elder at Parkville Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her father, George Lockhart and her brother, Mike Lockhart. Survivors include her husband, Michael Gunn; her daughters, Jess and Whitaker Gunn; her daughter and son-in-law, Ingle and Eric Lopata; her mother, Louise Lockhart; her brother and sister-in-law, Stan and Taia Lockhart and their children, Aryn and T.L.; her brother, Kenton Lockhart and his daughter Sydney; and her brother-in-law, Dick Gunn ("Uncle Bob"), his wife Sally, and his children, Andy and Sarah; as well as a host of very dear, long-time friends who have stayed by her side. The family will be receiving guests at 2:15 p.m. with a memorial service at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, at Parkville Presbyterian Church, 819 Main, Parkville MO, 64152. Flowers or contributions to the Weatherby Lake Junior Sailing Club, 7200 NW Eastside Dr., Weatherby Lake MO 64152 would be appreciated.

To the Gunn family,
I am so saddened to hear about Jan,
since Gary died just 3 weeks earlier, I had not heard this news. She was such a hoot and she and Gary had a great business relationship and they became friends and were supportive of one another in the past year.
My heart goes out to all of you.

I met Jan at her shop Home Embellishments. One of the few places you could go and buy such a variety of cool art work. She would tell me about all of the artists which made each piece I bought even more personal. I think of her every time I look at the artwork I acquired, especially when I look at the metal "Dancing Lady" in my front yard. Jan was always talking about her husband, children and all of the projects she had going. She was truly a remarkable lady who will be greatly missed.

Jan and I were high school friends and cheerleaders together. She was just the cutest little thing. She was the first girl I ever knew who wore her hair "different" every day. I was amazed. I'm sorry for your loss. It's wrenching to see a death notice of someone so vital that you knew so well. I worked for Jan at E.J. Ross also. We had a lot of fun, her laugh was priceless. Hello to Stanley and Mrs. Lockhart too. Sharon "Hoppy" Kincaid

My thoughts and prayers are with you and I am so sorry for your loss. Jan and I were in the same class at P.C.. My husband and Jan were taking radiation treatments at the same place in 2006. Jan had a very strong spirit. I will be out of state at the time of Jan's service but my thoughts will be with you.

Jan, you were my friend, confidante, soul mate and more. You were always there for me...no matter how short the notice or how far the distance. There isn't a major event in my life that you missed and for that I am eternally grateful. I will miss you more than words can express, but I will see you again. Lots of love, Annie.

My prayers are with your family. I have such fond memories of Jan and still live by some of the tidbits about life (and dating) she shared with me as a young lady fresh out of college. She had quite an impact on me, maybe more than she knew. Love, Alex

Mom.... You were so strong, upbeat and positive throughout it all! You beat every deadline the doctors said from day one till the very end. I am so proud of you and how you never let things hold you back! We are doing okay but we will always know that you will be watching us from up above! "It's never a good-bye, It's See ya later" Love you always and forever, Whitaker
