Abe Ohanian Obituary

OHANIAN, Abe S. Abe S. Ohanian of Duarte, California, died October 10 surrounded by family. He was six weeks shy of his 79th birthday, and had suffered a pair of strokes in the week before his death. A native of South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he moved in 1945 to the Southland, where he graduated from Wilson High (Los Angeles) and Cal State LA. He lived in El Sereno, South Pasadena, San Gabriel and Alhambra before settling in Duarte in 1965. He spent 51 years as a stockbroker and investment advisor for Sutro & Company, now RBC Dain Rauscher, in Los Angeles and Pasadena; at his death, he was senior vice-president for investments. A 47-year member of Throop Unitarian Universalist Church in Pasadena, he was extremely active in civic affairs and charity work throughout his life - especially through the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, for which he held various national leadership positions. He was preceded in death by his first two wives, Bernadine and Laurel, and by his stepson Darian. He is survived by his wife of ten years, Gloria Hooper Ohanian: his children Bernard (Kate Kelly) and Patricia (Annette Coffey) Ohanian; his stepdaughter Gretchen (Peter) Stein; his grandchildren Lila, Alex, Aaron, Raffi, and Sofia; his sister Najelle Rabbitt; his wife Gloria's children Becky (Terry) McKnight, Kim Hooper, Kit (Teresa) Hooper, Sue (Bob) Walker, and Lisa (Jim) Rowland; Gloria's 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; his mother-in-law Docia Buckrucker; and cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends around the country. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct 19, at Throop Unitarian Universalist Church, 300 S. Los Robles Ave., Pasadena. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to funds established in his name at either the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, 689 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, MA 02139 or the City of Hope Medical Center, 1500 E. Duarte Rd., Duarte, CA 91010.

Abe is the best thing to ever happen to me. I met him at Throop church and he decided I needed him. He was right. The man had a way of seeing what the world needs and being there. He will be missed deeply by me but will affect my life forever. I am so lucky that he loved me.What will we do without Abe.

I will miss Abe. He has inspired and influence everyone, including me. I am honoured to have met Abe. He has watched me grow from a child to an adult at Throop Church. He has always given great advice and was a role model for children adults alike. Abe lived a full life and left an everlasting imprint and influence on those priviledge to have met him.

I am not sure when I first met Abe and Gloria, but I do remember that he was a big part of my joining Throop Church. We were at a district meeting in Pasadena at my own UU church. I spent a lot of time with Abe and Gloria. Abe gently asked why I was not visiting with people from my own church, and I realized that I simply belonged to the wrong church. That was 10 years ago. Thank you, Abe and Gloria.

I got to know Abe through Throop Memorial Church. He was one of the most cheerful, generous, dynamic and life-affirming people I have ever known. I’ll remember Abe for those qualities, as well as for his humor, his life-celebrating family photos, his amazing collection of flags, faithfully displayed at annual Independence Day parties, his personal Armenian-American museum and his home orchard, whose fruit was regularly made available to church members and others. My heart goes out to his wife and soulmate, Gloria.

I worked at Sutro int the 1980s when I first began my career. Abe was a giving man and generous with his time and knowledge. I learned a great deal from him. Please accept my condolences for your loss of a great and honorable man.
