Matthew Matty Obituary

Matthew Scott Matty July 10, 1960- February 3, 2008 FORTSON, GA— Matthew Scott Matty, 47, of Fortson, GA died in Harris County Georgia Sunday, February 3, 2008. A celebration of life service will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Thursday, February 7, 2008 in the Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Macon Road Chapel with Reverend Paul Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Scott was born July 10, 1960, son of Ronald E. Matty and the late Doris E. Matty. He was the Marketing Distributor for Callaway Blue Water; Scott always personified the complete, wholesome, perfect man. He was a loving husband, proud father, and a faithful son. He was an affable, companionable, extroverted brother, uncle, and cousin. But more importantly, he was a true loyal friend and an honest gentleman. His family was the focal point of his life. He relished his role as a family man and mentor. He was an avid athlete and sportsman, excelling in every endeavor he participated in. He was in demand by everyone, but never demanded anything for himself from anyone. His compassion, friendship, and love for life and everyone in it, is near legendary. Losing him, at this premature stage in his life has rendered the fabric of all who knew and loved him, and it cheats those who were yet to know and love him. As he would say , "it was a great ride, too short, too soon over, but a great ride." Scott was also a member of the Columbus Bike Racing Association, United States Tennis Association, National Rifle Association, and the National Cycling Association. Survivors include his loving wife of fourteen years, Sherry Matty of Fortson, GA, Father, Ronald E. Matty of Columbus, GA; three daughters, Sarah Matty and Jessica Matty both of Atlanta, GA, Danielle Matty of Fortson, GA; one brother, Patrick Matty of Atlanta, GA, one sister, Michelle Helms and her husband, Richard of Columbus, GA; two nieces, Devin Helms and Autumn Helms both of Columbus, GA. Please celebrate his life and sign the online guest registry at www.mem.com.

I worked for Scott at Coke in Columbus around 91-92 as a route salesman. We did some mountain biking together after work when he was into motor-X. I left Coke in 93 and lost touch with Scott. I live in Opelika Al and am now working again in Columbus Ga and I saw the newspaper article at Mikes Bikes in Columbus a few weeks ago learned of his death. What I remember most about Scott was he wasnt affraid to get dirty to help those who worked for him. He was a fine man to work for! I felt a loss when I heard of his death and my prayers are with his familiy.

Scott has been on my mind and in my prayers along w/his family. I am a cyclist of 30 years, and am passionate about the sport, as I'm sure Scott was. My heart goes out to your loss, and I'm sure he'll be missed by the cycling community in Columbus.

I had the pleasure of knowing Scott through my husband Steve. He was a great cyclist, but even more important, a very special friend to my husband. We will not soon forget the committed father, husband and friend that he was. He touched a lot of lives.

Matt and I both had the pleasure of working with Scott at Coca-Cola in Columbus. When we transferred to the area not knowing a soul, Scott welcomed us like we were part of the gang. I had a particularly rough job of implementing a new system and met a lot of resistance, but Scott was instrumental in the success of the program and was a true ally and friend to me. He was definitely someone we missed when we moved to Atlanta and I was glad to hear from him from time to time.

His passing is way too soon and we grieve with his family and friends. The world has definitely lost a good man, but the world is also a better place for having had him in it. He and his family will remain in our hearts, thoughts and prayers.

God Bless,
Kelley Miller and family

My deepest sympathies to Sherry, his kids and family. I worked for Scott for 18 years at Coca-Cola and remembered the first day I met him. He welcomed me to the Coke family with that little smile he had as to say buddy you just don't know what you're getting into. Throughout the years Scott became a close friend to me. He was there during the passing of my mother and gave me advice on many things. Scott was a very successful manager but never took credit for it. He would always say it was his people that needed the credit and this is what kind of person he was. Scott was a true leader, devoted husband and FATHER for just about everyone at the Coca-Cola sales center. He cared for all of our needs and fought for us when needed. We will all miss him.

I only enteracted with Scott at the occasional social event but my husband, Bruce, knew Scott very well, having worked with him at Coca-Cola for many years.

From the way Bruce spoke of Scott I know he truly was a man who treated others with kindness, equality, respect and consideration. He, undoubtedly, knew the power of words and actions and strived to leave only positive memories with those who surrounded him.

Our hearts are heavy as we think of Sherry, the girls and the rest of his family. I hope a smile will cross your faces one day very soon as you think of moments you shared with him.

Scott,
I'll never forget the Friday night that we worked together pumping 99 cent gas and shutting down Macon Road! You never once complained about how hot it was or how the cars didn't seem to ever stop coming. That was how you were - you worked hard helped without being asked and everyone knew you'd be there for whatever. You will be truly missed by anyone who met you - you had that way about you.
Our family grieves for yours - may God grant them peace and the understanding that one day we will all be together again.
