Frank Capra Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 20, 2007.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Frank Capra Jr., a producer who helped build a major television and movie studio and whose father directed the Christmas classic "It's A Wonderful Life," has died. He was 73.

Capra Jr. died at a hospital in Philadelphia, said Bill Vassar, the executive vice president of Wilmington-based EUE Screen Gems Studios, of which Capra was president. Vassar said Capra died following a long fight with prostate cancer, which had spread over the past several months.

Under Capra's leadership, EUE Screen Gems' credits include several major motion pictures, including "28 Days," "The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood," "Domestic Disturbance," "Black Knight" and "A Walk to Remember."

He also was at the helm when "Dawson's Creek" - starring a then-unknown Katie Holmes - filmed at the studios, and he kept all nine of the studio's sound stages full in recent years between movies and the filming of another successful teenage soap, "One Tree Hill."

Capra was one of three children of Frank Capra and Lucille Rayburn Warner Capra, who tried to protect her children from the Hollywood life. Still, he could tell stories about dinners with Clark Gable and Carole Lombard, and said he was best friends with Gary Cooper's daughter Maria.

Capra worked alongside his father on the 1961 Bette Davis film "Pocketful of Miracles." He was a producer of three "Planet of the Apes" sequels and produced and directed several early television series, including "Gunsmoke" and "Dennis the Menace."

May the God of comfort and tender mercies continue to comfort your family and friends, and may you find comfort in the words found in the Holy Scriptures: "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."" Please accept my sincere condolences during this time of your loss.

For Frank...a producer who helped build a major television and movie studio and whose father directed the Christmas classic "It's A Wonderful Life.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Frank Capra, Jr was a great man. He helped create the full-time film industry in North Carolina with "Firestarter". He also served in the private & other areas of the public sector. Frank was personable, accessable & nice. I had the pleasure of working with him through the North Carolina Film Office. We will never forget Frank Capra, Jr.

I was an extra in the film Marie in Nov 1984 in Wilmington with Sissy Spacek. I remember being around Mr. Capra the two days while working on the film and how nice he was for what I thought was Hollywood royalty. His son was also an production asst. Thanks so much for bringing the film industry to NC. I'm an old movie buff and help start the Ava Gardner museum in Smithfield, NC. God bless the Capra family!

Frank was a friend and associate for nearly 10 years and he became a great supporter of my work. He was the person who encouraged me to bring my films to Wilmington from New York and I have been here for 7 years now. Endless hours talking "Old Hollywood" at lunch or at his office was a favorite past-time of ours. Looking forward to meeting up with Frank again someday.

I met Mr Capra on a hot day in N.C while I was stationed at Camp Lejeune. As a Marine trying to get home when my car broke down. A kind man stop offered me and my buddy a ride to the nearest gas station. I enjoyed his work and it demonstrated just how nice this man was. my prayers and thoughts to his family.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Mr. Capra was a very good friend of mine. I work at the Land Rover dealership in Wilmington, NC and when he came in for service or whatever, he was always very pleasant and of course, very interesting to talk to. We would sometimes spend hours talking... even though I knew he had more important things to do. I will miss him. Every time I see one of his productions, my heart will be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together and we will celebrate a life well-lived.
