I was fortunate enough to have Mr. Barnett as my elementary school principal in White Settlement. He was the first man I ever knew who spoke kindly to children. He always had a big smile on his face, always was warm and friendly. He made each kid feel like they were important, like they mattered. In those days, not many men seemed capable of that. At least not in my world. He sold my mother a set of encyclopedias, telling her I was very bright and had potential. Merely part of the sales pitch, but it made this little girl feel on top of the world and set the course for my future. I kept those encyclopedias, lugged them around long after they were outdated, and all because they brought back such warm memories of a man who instilled in me a confidence I'd never had before. I still have them, 55 years later. I've often wondered where he was. If I'd known, I could have told him what an impact he made on so many children, so long ago. Your loss is great, and today my heart is very sad for words not expressed in time. He was loved very much by all his children!
