Harley ELLMAN Obituary

ELLMAN, M.D., Harley M.

Harley M. Ellman, M.D., 84, of Dayton, OH, died on Jan. 15, 2021, in Naples, FL, after a struggle with cancer.

Harley was born on April 1, 1936, in Dayton, to John & Ida Ellman. The family later moved to Richmond, VA, where Harley grew up, going to school & working at his father's shoe store. He graduated from

Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond. He stayed home for college, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from the Univ. of Richmond in 3 years &

Phi Beta Kappa honors. Harley went on to earn a Doctor of Medicine degree from Medical College of VA and was

selected to join the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. In 1966-68, he served in the U.S. Army as a captain, stationed at Ft. Bragg, NC.

In 1964, he met Marianne Sue Bernie. After a courtship, the couple married and settled in Dayton. They had 4 children, Jeffrey, Lori, Lynne & Julie. Harley specialized in Rheumatology & Internal Medicine and had a successful

medical practice for over 50 years in Downtown Dayton.

Harley loved his job, rising in the wee hours every day for years to go to the hospital for rounds. Even away from the hospital and the office, he read medical journals and talked to other doctors about the practice of medicine. Late in life, he continued to have lunch at the doctors' lounge at the

hospital, sharing camaraderie and listening to talks on the

latest medical issues. He played golf whenever he could and nervously watched sports. He had a longstanding interest in World War II, reading fiction and nonfiction books on the

subject and watching the History Channel. It was fun to cook for Harley because he appreciated it all, and eating was a pure joy for him. Harley was kind and giving, and also liked to tease with his dry sense of humor.

Harley is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marianne Ellman; his children Jeffrey (Kelley) Ellman of Atlanta, GA; Lori Ellman of Sycamore, OH; Lynne (Scott) Goldberg of Columbus, OH; Julie (Ilan) Feuchtwang of Burlingame, CA; 7 grandchildren

(Lily, Sydney, Jessica, Jaden, Daniel, Jordan & Jake); his brother Leon (Alice) Ellman of Bonita Springs, FL; & his sister Arlene (Allan) Zeno of Norfolk, VA. He held a special place for long-time family friend Beatrice Bolden.

The funeral service will be for immediate family only. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Harley's memory be made to The Arthritis Foundation (arthritis.org/donate) or The Cleveland Clinic (my.clevelandclinic.org/giving). Glickler

Dr. Ellman was one of the first physicans I called on as a Lilly Pharmaceutical Representative in with my product "Nalfon" in 1976. Even though he seldom used it, he treated me kindness and respect. Wish I could have told him in person how much that meant to me. One day...

Dr. Ellman was my rheumatologist for many years. Besides being an excellent physician, I loved his sense of humor. No matter how I was feeling physically, I always left with a smile. He was a kind and caring man, and I will always be grateful to him. Sincere condolences to his family.
