Always passionate about the ocean and food, Doc and Patty opened up the Dock Food and Spirits in 1994 in his childhood home. He was a wonderful person. He was one of my best friends at Greenon High School during our junior year. My family moved to Germany for my senior year. I wish I could have known him longer. I always admired his upbeat positive attitude! He is in my thoughts. We have you, Patty, in our thoughts and prayers.

I went to high school with Doc for our junior year at Greenon High School. My father was in the Air Force and he was transferred to Wiesbaden Germany for my senior year. I graduated from Ohio State Vet School in 1969. Neither of us knew the other one was going to become a Veterinarian. We did not meet each other while in VetSchool. When we were in high school I don´t think I can remember one day that I ever saw him anything other than happy, jolly and outgoing. I always loved his personality. After vet school I went into the Air Force but I was fortunate to run into Doc again at an Ohio veterinary meeting. It was strange we instantly knew each other after not seeing one another for at least 15 or 20 years. I always loved being around him. He was the light in every room that he entered. I wish I had been able to spend more time with him.

We just found out that our favorite vet in Ohio has died. We now live in Florida. We just lost our Mickey at 17-1/2 years old. Dr. Schumann had a lot to do with our dogs living a long and happy life. Thanks Doc for taking such good care of our dogs. We cannot thank you enough.

We just learned of Doc's passing. We send our deepest sympathy to the family and to all of the staff at Enon Veterinary Clinic. He was our vet since 1988. He was a kind and compassionate caregiver to all of our many pets through the years. We admired him for his entrepreneurship as well. Our whole family remembers him fondly and will miss him.

richard schumann and i were both in the osu veterinary medicine class of 1974. he was a gentleman and a scholar. i remember one particular episode where he amazed dr. leroy johnson in anatomy lab. he had dissected a horse's leg with perfection - the incision in the skin, the muscles, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels and nerves were in laid out perfectly. when dr. johnson passed the dissecting table he said in amazement -
"where did you learn to do that?" another memory of richard was that he often used the phrase ( in jest ) "a nominal egg" when saying something was pricey or cost "an arm and a leg."
good memories of this man.

Dear Patty

My father was assigned to the Wright Patterson Air Force Institute of Technology for one year when I was a rising Junior in high school. So, I was a classmate of Jim's in 1960. My father was transferred to Wiesbaden, Germany in the summer of my Senior year so I graduated from a military dependent high school there in 1969. So, I only spent my Junior year with Jim and our classmates. He was always fun to be around. He was one of the most kind, caring, gentle and entertaining high school students I have ever met.

After high school I went on to the University of Maryland in Germany for two years then two more at The Ohio State University before entering Vet School. Sandy and I were married in Lima, Ohio on July 2, 1966. I graduated from Vet School in 1969. Then I spent five years in the Air Force as a DVM. Sandy and I came back to Columbus in 1974. I worked as an Associate Veterinarian for two years. Then I, like Jim, fulfilled my life's dream of opening my own practice, Glencoe Animal Hospital, in Columbus, Ohio.

I tell you this because after many years of practice and going to numerous Vet CE meetings I ran face to face into Doc at an OVMA meeting in Columbus somewhere between 1976 and 1986. To my knowledge we had never discussed veterinary medicine in high school. And, we were face to face friends for less than a year. Yet, the moment we bumped into each other it was like old times. After all those years we knew each other instantly.

In 2001, I sold my practice to Dr. Annette Gibson. She was a long term friend and associate DVM for 19 years. In 2001, Sandy, and I moved to Florida so I could accept a teaching job at St. Petersburg College School of Veterinary Technology. After 11 years we followed our children to Beaufort, SC and recently to Burlington, NC.

Now, the strange thing is that Jim was on my mind during the last three months, and I kept thinking I should call him and catch up on how he was, and the latest on our classmates and Enon.

When it is convenient and comfortable for you I would appreciate the chance to speak with you, Patty.

With Our Sympathy and God's Many Blessings

Dear Patty, Jeff, Ryan, and Family,

I just heard about Dr. Schumann and I don’t know when I’ve been more shocked. Dr. Schumann always was a force of nature and then some, a person so filled with life that this loss seems impossible. While I have no doubt that heaven is a livelier, more interesting place now, and that all the animals Dr. Schumann loved, all of those he saved, and all of those he saved from pain and suffering in their last moments are there to welcome and celebrate him, I am so, so sad. From the day I first went to work for Dr. Schumann and Patty when I was 15 cleaning kennels at 5:30 in the morning before school and then helping in the office and later working as a veterinary assistant, Dr. Schumann taught me so much, helped me in so many ways, and made me laugh with his irrepressible high spirits. As sad as I am today, I cannot help but smile at the thought of him bursting through the office door smiling and asking what I was up to, even though he knew it generally meant I was bringing in a wild cat to be fixed, a rescued English bulldog with a myriad of problems, a sick rescued kitten, and over the decades, dozens of pets with a litany of other common and unusual conditions. Even after I graduated with my first degree and went to work in another field, I stayed in close contact with Dr. Schumann and, no matter how far away I lived, I took my beloved animals to him. He always told me to call him anytime day or night, and when I did, he always responded, right away, whether he was at home asleep after a long day of work, on vacation in Mexico, at The Dock, or anywhere else. As much as I hated to bother him at odd hours, in the event of a pet crisis, there was no one else I trusted more to help me do the right, best thing to help my pet and no one else I knew would understand more than Dr. Schumann did. I almost never cry and certainly nothing in public but I’ve cried more in front of Dr. Schumann over my pets than I’ve cried in front of anyone else ever. In those awful, heartbreaking times, Dr. Schumann always was so kind and helped me and my pets through those horrible moments. I’ll never forget how he came back to the vet office, with dear Robin in tow, very late one night when my beloved English bulldog, Princess was dying and in pain. He carried her from the car and made sure that her last minutes were peaceful and painless. It was one of the worst moments of my life and I’ll always be grateful to Dr. Schumann for his kind words and help then as in countless other times. Dr. Schumann and I were not related but he and dear Patty, Jeff, and Ryan were family of my heart, and I am so sad for them and all those who worked with him and loved him. I am sad, too, for my children and my pets, who knew and loved Dr. Schumann, too, and I am sad for me. I wish you all, wish us all, comfort in our favorite memories of Dr. Schumann. Through the kind of tears I usually only cry at Dr. Schumann’s office in a pet crisis, I cannot help but smile as I remember Dr. Schumann with his joyful, irrepressible spirit and kind, tender heart under his great humor. I will be grateful to him, remember him, and love and miss him always. Thank you, Patty, Jeff, Ryan, and families for sharing him with us all.

Doc, Thank you for being a great neighbor, loving family man, kind and gifted Vet, and creating a wonderful restaurant and fun tropical hang out in Enon. You cared for many of our furbabies, you always had a warm, friendly smile and you will be missed here very much. Thank you for sharing your journey, Doc.

“Doc” Schumann was an original. He never knew a stranger and welcomed everyone with a smile. He was a skilled vet and built a valued and respected practice. YS PetNet trusted many of our fosters in his hands. I never stopped into the practice that he didn’t take the time to show me around and all of the new technology. He did so much for the Enon community, adding great food and live music. My heart goes out to the Schumann family for their tremendous loss.
