From an early age my dads cousin Betty Jane was known to me as "Aunt Betty". If you ask me, I cannot tell your where the term of affection came from or even when. She has just always been Aunt Betty to me and my siblings. Although the definition of Aunt is "the sister of one's father or mother" I have come to learn there is a much broader use of the endearment Aunt, one which applies to my use of the word Aunt when talking about Betty.

When you google why are aunts special you will find the following: Aunts play an important role in the lives of nieces and nephews. They serve as the playful, supportive, loving and nurturing figures. It's also important to get involved, find time to play and always be a shoulder to lean on. Eloquently describes Aunt Betty to me and explains how she became the honorary aunt of our family.

My memories of her include a gentle and encouraging voice, a bright smile, positive affirmation, unparalleled commitment of love, nurturing and dedication to her Uncle Edward and grandfather Podgie ( who she cared for until their passing), and a constant support to my grandfather Art.

A playful Great Aunt Betty to the next generation of Hicks children she always arrived with a bag full of McDonald's Happy Meal Toys at every family gathering. They would refer to her excitedly as McDonald's Great Aunt Betty.

Few people pass through this world selflessly dedicating their life to others and even fewer do it out of genuine love seeking nothing in return. My dad (Ronnie to her) was in awe of her unwavering commitment to family and indebted to her for the love, gentleness and dignity she showed their uncle and grandfather.

From all of us Aunt Betty - Thank You for sharing with us and showing us a life lived humbly and with gratitude is an amazing legacy and lesson to leave the next generation.

You will be missed!
Love, Shawn Hicks Bonine

To Jeff, Roxane and Josh - All my love. You are in my thoughts and prayers. May every tear you shed find its way to a beautiful memory of your mother and grandmother.
