Derrick and I were not close, but as neighbours we saw each other nearly every day. Despite not having a close bond, it was hard to not feel comfortable around Derrick. He emanated friendliness and spoke with a stature and tone of voice that I think would've put anyone at ease. I don't know the details of his passing, but I do know that if learning about it has saddened me, then the weight of sadness laid upon his family must be immense. Derrick made Daytona Village feel like a home and as someone who has seldom felt at home anywhere, I could not possibly thank him enough for that.
I hope that the family is able to cope and heal swiftly, I cannot imagine the pain that this loss has brought them.

Its hard to believe Derrick is no longer with us. He was full of life and energy; nearly always had a smile on his face and looked at the brighter side of things. He was a dedicated worker & always fully present in his interactions w others and in his Meadowdale duties. He is deeply missed.

Derrick
What a blessing he was to this world. Kind, humble, friendly and down to earth man. He was a gem and true gentleman & good coach.
We know Derrick through sports & got to stay connected through working @ DPS.
Rest in peace

Coach D, thank you for teaching me hard work and dedication. Even thought I was never a sprinter you always showed your support. We had the best conversations while picking out your favorite blow pop flavors. You will be missed and thank you so much for all the lessons you taught me.
