Marlene McLefresh Obituary

McLefresh (Smart), Marlene

Marlene W. McLefresh, a beacon of love, kindness, and strength, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2024, with her son, Dan, by her side. She was 90 years young!

Marlene was born to Charles and Irene (Wildenhaus) Smart on February 16, 1934, in Dayton, OH. A lifelong Daytonian, Marlene graduated from Julienne High School in 1952 and later attended Sinclair Community College earning an associate degree in legal studies. She had a long career at Montgomery County Childrens Services and upon retirement, volunteered at Kettering Hospital where she provided countless volunteer hours for over 10 years. She led a life defined by her energy, positivity, enthusiasm, and dedication to those she loved. She touched countless lives with her warmth, outgoing "chattiness" and her ability to engage with people regardless of background.

Marlene found joy in simple pleasures, whether it was playing cards, Wii bowling, or enjoying the social life offered by her community at 10 Wilmington Place. Her zest for life and appreciation of its beauty serves as a reminder to all to embrace each moment with gratitude and joy.

Marlene is survived by son Dan Bowman, his wife Mary and their children Bree (Eric Maxeiner) of Silver Spring, MD, and Brent (Kristin), and her two great granddaughters, Brooke and Brielle, Pittsburgh, PA. She is also survived by her brother Ted Smart and loving companion Will Hankey. She was preceded in death by her father Charles Smart, mother Irene (Wildenhaus), husband Donald Bowman, son Don Bowman and husband George McLefresh.

A celebration of Marlene's life is planned in May.

Marlene was a " shining light" in our lives. We are saddened to learn of her passing. We always stopped in to visit Uncle George and Aunt Marlene in their Dayton home when we traveled to Ohio. Never a dull conversation or idle moment! When Marlene moved to 10 Wilmington Pl., our visits continued with lunches at Archers per her guidance! There are so many wonderful things we can say about Marlene ~ this we know, she brought us much joy! We will miss you, Marlene. Love always, Rick and Donna Bogue

I remember the 1st Thanksgiving at your house and the mashed potatoes very extra salty. You were the aunt that made me smile and laugh. I know you will keep heaven in line. Love you

This lady definitely had a piece of my heart. I can only hope I grow older to be like her. The self proclaimed boss of 10WP, my little "Judge Judy". She'd bust into my office with concerns I couldn't help but act on immediately, followed by a kiss on the head, and "love you sweeties." I never had a grandmother figure like Marlene. She literally wanted the best for everyone. She ruffled a lot of feathers, but always for the right reasons. She will be greatly missed!

The Caporal Family

May 3, 2024

Our family has known The McLefresh/Bowman Family for more than 50 years. Marlene was always gregarious and so full of life. Either playing cards or other fun games or just asking how you are doing, she was full of spirit! She so enjoyed her new home at 10 Wilmington Place where she renewed old friendships, and made plenty of new ones. A friend of ours moved in on Wilmington Ave and Marlene took her under her wing and made sure she made friends, That's the kind of caring person she was! Marlene will be truly missed!

We send our love to Dan, Mary, Bree and Brent!

Marlene I will miss you, your wisdom, your advise and your humor. When I first meet you 2 years ago at 10 Wilmington I was intimidated by you until I noticed your loving heart. I learned to look forward to you coming to the front desk. You were so funny especially when I had to shave the perm out of my hair and you would say "oh take that wig off you are so much prettier without it". Fly high little angel with the big voice.
