Kevin Schauer Obituary

Schauer, Kevin

Kevin Schauer passed away on Saturday July 6th, 2024, at the Laurelwood Assisted Living Facility in Dayton, Ohio. He was just two days away from turning 65, but he did get to celebrate his birthday by going to his all-time favorite event on the 4th of July - the Centerville Americana Festival.

In spite of his life-long disabilities, Kevin had an amazingly easy-going and good-natured personality. He would "buddy up" to anyone he could engage in a conversation - no matter if they were rich and famous, down and out, or anywhere in between. He was always eager to share his interest in watches and clocks, and equally inquisitive about the other person's interests. This "ability" was way more remarkable and memorable than his disabilities. In the restaurants within a few blocks of downtown Centerville, Kevin knew most of the owners, the employees and regular customers - and those interactions got him the two nicknames: "Dewey" and the "Mayor of Centerville'. Kevin brightened up the days of the staff and his fellow residents at Laurelwood so much so that his loss moved many of them to tears as if they had lost a close friend or family member. That said, his actual family members consisting of siblings, their spouses, and their kids - as well as cousins, nieces, and nephews - will miss him even more.

Following the example set by his Dad and Stepmom, Kevin had arranged to have his body donated to the Anatomical Gift Program at the Wright State University School of Medicine.

A date for his Celebration of Life has not been set and will not be in the near future, but it will be announced via this newspaper. His Christian friends and relatives are at peace knowing that whether or not he fully understood what it meant to accept Jesus as his Lord and Savior, Kevin is Heaven-bound.

Living A couple of blocks from the Kevin's family home I recall him passing past our house for many years.....first on his bicycle and then his truck. Frequently he would say hi or wave. We rarely spoke but one time he asked me did I still have my Lawn Boy Mower. Very observant. It impresses me how many lives he has touched in such a positive way. My prayers go out to family and friends

My condolences to all of his friends and family. I always looked for him when I went into Bills and when I didn´t see him in December of 2023, where he always sat, where I´d say hi to him, it concerned me. Instead of Kevin sitting on his stool there was a reserved sign at his spot. I asked the staff and they weren´t sure but knew he wasn´t doing well. Since then I had wondered about Kevin. I grew up going up Bills and Kevin was a part of my memories. Always so kind with a smile. You are missed and will always be. RIP

Kevin was one of my customers at the bank in centerville and he was super sweet and one of my favorites. He was always a joy to wait on and would always come in and show me his newest watch. He would sometimes come in just to chat and after I left there he would still say hey to me whenever I would see him at bills, and once I even saw him waving at me in the window of my new job. He will be missed for sure!

The summer of 1974/1975 I worked for the Schauer family landscaping company.
Every morning we would ride the trucks to Spring Valley to cut sod then return to the Ponderosa restaurant in Centerville for lunch. Kevin was always there. Along with his siblings Father and Grandpa.
Best summer days I´ll always remember. Rest in Peace Kevin

Kevin was a staple in the city of Centerville. I was always greeted by him when I visited Bill's Donuts and he was always such a pleasure. On the chance I saw him when I worked at Speedway he was always so kind and we had the best conversation! It hurts me deeply to know of his passing. This world is darker loosing such a soul whose known no stranger.

I first met Kevin when I was 6 years old back in 1987. He was very good friends with my dad. My dad used to take me to Bill's donuts every morning for breakfast. I saw him every day for quite a few years. Then as I grew older I saw him less. My mother had taught him in elementary School. She told me a lot about him when he was younger and how he struggled. All of that came as a shock to me, because I had always known him as a kind and gentle soul, and never viewed him as anything other than an friend and another human being in my life. I was a child when we first met and I never saw him as anything less or different than me. As time and life went on my perception of him never changed, though my understanding of his life did. He was a gentle soul and a very special light in this city. In my late 20s and 30s I stood up for him a few times when some teenagers were acting foolish. I also witnessed plenty of others do the same, including some of those who had previously been those foolish teens years before. I can only attribute this to Kevin being such a gentle soul and loving and caring person that he taught others how to be better human beings. I consider myself very lucky to have known him and that he considered me a friend. There are so many people in this world today that he has impacted, including myself. He is much loved and will be sorely missed by his family, me, and everyone else whose lives he touched. May you rest in peace Kevin. You have always been, and will forever be, a teacher of kindness, an instructor of acceptance, and most importantly a legend!

Hey! Dewie!
