Robert Elrod Obituary

ELROD, Robert Henry

Robert Henry Elrod, 82, passed peacefully at his home in the early morning hours of August 13, 2024. He died as he lived, on his own terms. Pop was born in Griffin, Georgia to John Charles and Carolyn Barnette Elrod in 1942. Here he met his childhood sweetheart, Nancy Evans. They were married on December 28, 1965. Mom, despite her passing in 2013, has been the guiding light in Pop's life and his approach to death. "No whining!" The garden she lovingly created has been a gentle reminder to him of her beauty and their abiding love.

Robert completed his higher education at Presbyterian College and Clemson University. Mom and he moved to Decatur, Georgia in 1969, where they both began 30-year careers in education. Pop taught in the Decision Sciences department of the J Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University. He influenced decades of students with his lightning intelligence, unwavering high standards and post semester outings to the Ivy Street Library, which wasn't really a library. He and his colleagues took their command of their discipline around the world, teaching in the Eastern European countries of Georgia, Poland and Azerbaijan. He retired as an Associate Professor Emeritus in the summer of 1999.

Robert was a pivotal member of the Avondale Estates community. He held positions as president of the Avondale Swim and Tennis Club, longtime director of the Avondale Estates Labor Day Race, and Commander of the esteemed Avondale Men's Sporting and Philosophical Society. Mom and Pop's home at 80 Lakeshore was renowned for the parties they held there. They hosted annual Trim the Tree parties at Christmas and gathered people after many Avondale High School football games. Their home was the venue for Luke Simpson's epic Fourth of July Parties at the Elrods complete with yearly t shirts, and rousing choruses of Amazing Grace.

He spent his latter years following Mom's directions in the garden, doting on his beloved grandchildren and helping build and sustain The Corner Pub. He is survived by his sister, Joan Collins; son, Joshua; daughter-in-law, Bethy; and grandchildren, Sawyer and Amalia, who were the absolute center of his days. Pop's last party will be held on August 24 at 3:00 PM in Nana's infamous garden at 80 Lakeshore Drive, Avondale Estates, GA 30002.

Josh,

I only today learned of his passing. He was my favorite professor during my college years at GSU.
He inspired me to LOVE Decision Sciences. He was a gifted teacher.
That Dept. had a number of "characters".
Geoff Churchill , I married his niece ( against his advice I might add)
I also crewed for Geoff in his SCCA exploits over several years.
Earle Steinberg.
I wouldn't call your dad a character per se, but he really was special to me.
When Churchill died his wife hosted a meeting of friends. What a wild mix of retired gsu profs and scca big whigs. I was outside and your dad arrived and I have no idea how he knew but his first words were of sympathy as he had heard of my second wife of 19 yrs had passed. I was stunned. He was a great human Josh.
I last saw him when I visited your? restaurant in avondale decatur shortly afte you opened it I think.
It was SO good to see him.
Last memory: His stat courses had many discussion questions on tests ( what stat "test" to use, why etc )
One test I received back from him had this written in red: "A+, An excellent discussion". Josh I kept that test for decades.
Anyway, I extend very tardy condolences. I loved ur dad.

Both my husband, Larry Fisher, and I had Dr. Elrod as a statistics professor in the Georgia State graduate programs, although not at the same time. What a wonderful teacher he was. He actually made statistics interesting! We will miss seeing him on our walks around Avondale Estates.

Will miss Papa Elrod immeasurably on my twice a year or so visits back to Avondale, either seeing him reading on the front patio and waving as I walk around the lake or getting those wonderful bear hugs if we got closer and spoke... condolences to Josh and his family.

Hello, Josh. I am so sorry to hear this sad news. Whenever I think of Robert, I think of someone who lived life with gusto and never met a stranger. His and your mom´s hospitality was epic. I am so sorry that Greg and I will not be able to attend his life celebration as my mother passed away on Friday and we will be celebrating her life here in Charlotte, but know that you and your family and all those who loved Robert will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Robert is a friend to my neighbors John and Elaine Mizell. So when I complimented his hat while walking my toddler son around the lake with Elaine, he soon found out where I lived and brought me a tiny cap similar to his for my boy. What a kind act, what a wonderful way to live. I loved to see him around Avondale.
