Thomas Koenig Obituary

KOENIG, Thomas Arthur

Thomas Arthur Koenig, aged 81, passed away on August 29, 2024, in Berkeley Lake, GA. Born on August 13, 1943, in Chicago, IL, he was the son of the late Edward and Daisy Koenig. He outlived his brother, Bob Koenig; and sister, Ginny Vaske; as well as his cherished fur baby, Ernie Banks.

Tom, is survived by his loving spouse, Libby Thacker Koenig; and their children: Scott James (Jay), Renee McFail (Tim), Libba James-Ricks (Mary), Dawn Armstrong (Ryan), and Andrea Wagner (Paul). He was a proud grandfather to, Áine and Ciara McFail; Leah and Hailey James-Ricks; TJ, Emily, and Matthew Armstrong; Hana and Dawson Andrew; Alyssa and Brady Wagner. He also leaves behind his brothers, Jim, John, and Bill Koenig.

Tom received his early education at St. Benedict's Catholic School and furthered his studies at Chicago Technical College. His professional life was marked by a distinguished career as an engineer, primarily with Dynasound, Inc., where he worked on sound masking and audio security countermeasures. His dedication led him to eventually purchase the company, considering his employees as part of his extended family.

A sports enthusiast, Tom was a lifelong Cubs fan, and after moving to Georgia, he also embraced the Atlanta Braves, and the Atlanta Falcons, holding season tickets for 20 years. He cherished Sundays spent tailgating and supporting the Falcons with his close friends. Tom's passion for sports was not just that of a spectator; he played catcher since childhood and continued playing senior softball well into his adulthood. He also enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting events and relaxing trips to St. Simon's Island and Gould's Inlet.

Tom's legacy is marked not only by his professional achievements and his love for sports but also by the deep and enduring relationships he fostered with his family and friends. He will be remembered for his robust spirit, generosity, and the profound impact he had on the lives of those around him. Throughout his life, he maintained strong connections with his childhood friends and fraternity brothers, cherishing these relationships deeply.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2024, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, at the Berkeley Lake Chapel and Pavilion. Attendees are encouraged to wear their favorite Braves or Falcons attire to honor Tom's beloved teams.

Tom and I played softball at an age when most people would wonder "why." As we grew older, we received answers that indicated that the reason had to be "fellowship, with occasional productivity." Throughout the years, Tom learned that his constant rhyming distracted opponents and teammates alike, which created in reality a bonus for the team Tom was on.

I enjoyed talking to Tom on many issues, and even on the occasion of serious topics, Tom kept the smiles beaming.

My prayers now are for his Family, that the joyfilled memories will make the hurt a little less. God bless!

I didn´t have the opportunity to know Tom as most; but the few occasions that I have shared with him, I found him to be personable-a kind, caring individual and most considerate. One of my greatest memories of Tom is his last conversation reminding me of his continuous prayers for God´s miracle concerning my well- being.
Thank you, Tom, for your warm
demeanor. You will be missed by many. (I think I know who you are
playing Senior ball with in Heaven.)

When God created Tom, He gifted the world with a very special and unique individual.

God said:
"I need someone charismatic and charming, yet sensitive and strong...
I need someone who can make others laugh but who can also laugh at himself...
I need someone who can listen intently to the words of others but who is also a master story teller...
I need someone who has a sense of humor, someone witty and quick- thinking but someone who is equally pious and humble...
I need someone who respects, embraces and cherishes his fellow man...
I need someone who brings joy to others, someone who freely shares material goods and who is generous and giving in spirit."

So God gave us Tom.

Thank you for bringing a smile to the faces of so many over the course of your lifetime. We are all truly blessed to have known you.

Tom was a great friend and his sense of humor was contagious. I was honored to join him for many of the Falcons´ games over the last 5 years. A highlight was each tailgate where we laughed and had a great time. Since where we parked was typically dominated by the visiting team´s fans, Tom always reached out to them and made friends with everyone around us. Even though the Falcons had losing seqsons for the past 6 years, Tom always was thinking that improvement would come soon - thus an optimist. What a great guy and friend who will be missed. God got a good man who will brighten and enliven heaven.

Tom and I went thru school, together from kindergarten to Hugh School Graduation, He lived perhaps three blocks from us so we often walked to school together along with John Ackerman. Since my parents home was the collection area of the neighborhood, he would often be one of the people hanging out on our porch, He was a good and trusted friend, Our dating years were spent comparing notes of his attractions and mine and we would often give advise to one another, we didn´t have video games or other such nonsense to keep us off the streets, in fact, we were all mostly on the streets. Playing softball or other games, I know I feel blessed to have been raised during those special years when people were entertained by getting to know one another, we played together and didn´t know that we were not just one big crazy group. In my mind and heart, Tom will always be missed as he was special to me. How wonderful to have known someone since we were 5 years old, I had talked to him recently as he was trying to identify students from our 8th grade graduation. He was always interested in keeping those special bonds alive. I said prayers when I heard God had called him home, Goodbye good buddy, please, watch out for me from your special seat,

I had known of Libby and her family since I was a little boy. When I re met her at a Berkeley Lake BLFF I was pleased. Doing so is how I met Tom. We quickly connected via sports and dogs. Tom was so generous, taking his friends to Braves and Falcon games. The tailgating was great fun. I miss him already.

Tom is one individual that would always light up a room, with his big smile, big personality and welcoming nature. He brought so much joy to so many. His generosity and genuine caring for others was unprecedented. Though brief as it was, it was an honor and a pleasure to have known him. He will be sorely missed.
