Edward Karl Berthold

Edward Karl Berthold formerly of Wheaton Funeral services for Edward Karl Berthold, 68, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, at the First United Methodist Church, 600 S. Main, Eaton Rapids, Mich., with Pastor Tim Olson and Pastor Dale Alschwede officiating. Born June 23, 1935, in Chicago, the son of Robert and Helene (nee Schmidt) Berthold, he died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, in Cadillac, Mich. Interment will follow services in the Oakwood Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Mr. Berthold was an active member, and served on various boards of The First Lutheran Church in Charlotte, Mich. He was a past president of the Eaton Rapids Rotary Club and he was active in numerous educational administrative organizations. Mr. Berthold was a retired principal of Lockwood Elementary School in Eaton Rapids, former principal at St. Lorenz Lutheran School in Frankenmuth, Mich. and was a teacher/principal at St. John Lutheran School in Wheaton, for 18 years. Mr. Berthold was also instrumental in setting up Imagination Library. Ed is survived by his wife of 12 years, Ann (Williams) of Eaton Rapids; children, Robert Karl (Lisa) Berthold, Alexandria Berthold of Fenton, Mich., Mark Edward Berthold of Eaton Rapids; step-daughter, Jennifer Clark; grandchildren, Conner and Rebekah of Eaton Rapids; and step-grandson, Ryan of Saginaw, Mich.; father- and mother-in-law, Ralph and Ethel Williams of Saginaw, Mich.; brothers-in-law, James (Linda) Williams of Traverse City, Mich., and Robert (Barbara) Williams of Saginaw; several cousins, nieces and nephews. Ed was preceded in death by daughter-in-law, Tara Berthold; two brothers; and one sister. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. today, at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main St., Eaton Rapids, Mich. Memorials may be made to either the Eaton Rapids Medical Center or to the Edward Berthold Scholarship Fund at Charolotte First Lutheran Church.
