Sister M. Vincent Ponceitta

M. Ponceitta Obituary

Sister M. Vincent Ponceitta, OP Sister Vincent (Frances Virginia) Ponceitta, OP, died peacefully in San Rafael on June 19th, 2007 following a brief illness. Born and raised in Napa, California, she entered the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael in 1936. Sister Vincent spent a majority of her life teaching in Catholic elementary schools in San Rafael, Lodi, Vallejo, Daly City, Benicia and San Leandro. In 1979, she retired from teaching and was appointed the director of the kitchen at the former Motherhouse in San Rafael for 11 years. Since 1995, she has continued her ministry of service by creative handicraft projects which she prepared for an annual boutique. The monies she has raised contributed to our missionary sisters, many needy causes, and the Family School in San Francisco. In her retirement years, Sister continued to serve the Sisters in many ways as a driver and companion. Sister's joy of the past 17 years of life was with her "adopted" family from Afghanistan for whom she has regularly visited, babysat, taught English, and for whom she has been affectionately called "Grandma Sister". Sister Vincent is remembered by her cousins, devoted students, and her Dominican Sisters. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, June 22, at 10:00 AM at St. Raphael Church, 1104 Fifth Avenue, San Rafael, CA 94901. Burial at St. Dominic's Cemetery in Benicia, California. Memorial contributions may be made to Dominican Sisters of San Rafael, 1520 Grand Avenue, San Rafael, CA 94901. Monte's Chapel of the Hills Family Owned and Operated San Anselmo ~ 415-453-8440

SR. Vincent has been a fond memory for this student in her '46 St, Vincent Class. She used the Dick and Jane readers and encouraged academic competition. The first seat in the first row was the highest achievement. I enjoyed competing and she certainly showed her love for us in all of her teaching.

I was a student of Sister Vincent at St Raphael's in San Rafael in the mid '50s. Her passing seems to be another mark of the end of an older era.

Just over a month ago my wife and I attended a Class of 1957 reunion for St. Vincent Ferrer Elementary School in Vallejo. Sr. Vincent attended the reunion. As she was our class 1st Grade teacher in 1949-50, I was pleasantly surprised at the vitality and energy Sr. Vincent still had. She greatly added to the reunion. Our prayers go out to her relatives and the Dominican community.
