We wanted you to know that we will be honoring and remembering your loved one this holiday season. We have recently sent Care Packages to our deployed troops in his name. Each package will carry the name, photo, service branch, rank and hometown of James W. Cawley US Marine Staff Sergeant.
We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, our family, friends and many others who support our mission.

My daughter Lindy told me she needed to write about a veteran for school and that she wanted to write about her great uncle James. So I pulled up some pictures and told her some stories. I told her that if he were here, he would call her "pumpkin" and say she looked just like me when I was little. He might even call her baby baby Cheem, because he always called me Baby Cheem after my aunt who he called Cheem. She thought that was hillarious. Then we printed out a picture of you and a bio that someone had written online. We miss you and look forward to seeing you again some day!

James, I visited the Field of Heroes today in Pocatello, ID. There are now over 7000 crosses. I decorated your cross and it still hurts, really hurts. You were so special and the things you accomplished were amazing. Brady, Roth and I miss you and talk of you often. God bless and keep you until we meet again. Love you.

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised Le Ron A. Wilson (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

On behalf of the Cawley family, I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to post a kind thought or a memory here. My family and I do go to sites dedicated to fallen soldiers and we do take the time to read and re-read all the expressions others have offered. They are a great source of comfort and pride to us. It is especially comforting to hear from those of you who knew Jim to take the time to post your thoughts and remembrances of him. Most of you know as well as we do that Jim was every bit the man he is described as. To hear others express it means the world.
Just to provide any of you some comfort who still grieve for Jim and his wife and kids, I wanted to tell you that yes, his death has left a terrible hole. It is as painful to me today as it was the first time I heard the news. Maybe even more so. But not all of it is the kind of horrible hole that some would imagine. His wife has become much stronger...doing things she never would have done before. She is every bit as much a hero as Jim was. She rarely asks for help. She won't allow people to do for her what she can do for herself. His children are also doing well. They carry around a lot of pride for their father. They work hard and help their mother. And when I'm with them, we never avoid the subject of Jim. We talk of him and laugh over good memories and the fine sense of humor Jim had. I never miss an opportunity to tell them something about their father. Places we went, things we did, funny stories and also we talk about Jim's many accomplishments. To them, he isn't really gone. When I play and tease with them, they even tease me back and tell me their Dad will come back just to haunt me. And I am a better person now out of what has happened. I have great pride in my family name and the honor that Jim brought to thaat name. I have the great honor of being the brother of the finest human being I have ever known and in sharing that pride with others. I no longer take for granted all the beautiful things and all the beautiful people in my life. I get the privilege and the opportunity to fill in for Jim with his kids and trying to be the best uncle I can. I can't begin to describe how rewarding that is. To me, Cecil and Keiko are as precious as my own kids now. Thank you all again.

Platoon while serving in the 1980's He remembers Jim as a kind hearted but tough Marine, who was fantastic, intelligent and thought more about those around him than himself. I am grateful to have been a friend of Jim since when we served together in the Camp Pendelton Singles Branch in the elders quroum presidency in 1984 and 1985. Everyone who knew Jim had highest respect for him. He was a dedicated Priesthood holder who fill every assignment with a cheerful attitude. He was also a model Marine. His entire adult life was about service to God, country and his fellow man and was the product of a kind, generous family whom I got to know while living with Cecil and his wife in 1987. I hold fond memories close to my heart and in my mind of Jim. I'm blessed to have known him and to have worked with him on so very many SWAT calls. I would go through any door at any time with Jim. James was a good friend of mine, we grew up together and graduated from Roy High School. James will be missed, I am so thankful for men like him that are willing to put their life on the line for freedom. May God bless his family with all the blessings they will need to help them in their time of need. Thank you James for your sacrifice and love of your country
