Charles Moore Obituary

February 15, 1927 ~ December 9, 2007

MONTEREY – The spirit of Father Charles L. Moore, 80, peacefully departed his body on December 9, 2007. Father Charlie was born on February 15, 1927 in Oregon.
He was known by many as a spiritual teacher, historian and scholar. He was a graduate of Stanford University and Law School and in 1954, he was elected District Attorney in Santa Cruz County. After leaving that position, Father Charlie devoted his full attention to religious studies and in 1964 was ordained a Roman Catholic priest.
He held degrees in philosophy and theology from Catholic University. Father Charlie's linguistic avocation resulted in the study of Latin at a Benedictine monastery and Greek at a Jesuit seminary. Father Charlie studied many languages including Native American.
His travels took him all around the world in search of the ancient roots of religious and spiritual practice. His teachings were extensively influenced and enhanced by the wisdom of the Buddhist, Jewish, Hindu, Hawaiian, Celtic and Native American Indian spiritualities. He especially enjoyed his work with the Native American Esselen people of Monterey County.
After Father Charlie retired from the priesthood, he continued to learn and share his spiritual journey with many. In 2006 he published his book, "Synthesis Remembered – Awakening Original Innocence". This was the crowning achievement to his life of Grace, Gratitude and Compassion.
Viewing and visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 18, 2007 from 4-8 p.m. at The Paul Mortuary Chapel, 390 Lighthouse Avenue, Pacific Grove. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Pacific Coast Church, 522 Central Avenue, Pacific Grove. Dr. Bill Little will officiate. A reception will follow at The Holly Farm, 9200 Carmel Valley Road, from 1:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. Interment will be Thursday, December 20, 2007 in Los Osos Valley Memorial Park, Los Osos, CA.
Memorials in memory of Father Charlie may be made to: Charles Moore Memorial Trust, c/o First National Bank, 495 Washington Street, Monterey, CA 93940. Friends are invited to sign the online guest book for Father Charlie and leave their condolences at: www.thepaulmortuary.com.

Father Charlie, always in my heart's memory from Santa Teresita Catholic Summer camp cabin seminarian counselor with spiritual inspiration when I was 15, until our last visit near Monterey, California. God bless you Charlie, as you were first called, through Eternity with Jesus, in Love, Amen.

Seminarian Charlie was our very spiritually inspiring cabin counselor in 1962 at Camp Santa Teresita where I first met him. Later he became my life saving in-person confessor at his first parish assignment at Old Mission San Luis Obispo CA in 1964, where I was a junior at Mission College Preparatory High School one block down from the Rectory.. In 1967 I studied at Ryan Preparatory Minor Seminary in Fresno, CA where Charlie also began his seminary studies to become a very good Catholic priest who inspired many.

I now live in San Luis Obispo, Ca where Father Charlie was first assigned as a newly ordained priest for the diocese of Monterey-Fresno. He lived in the Rectory behind the Old Mission 1772. Sometimes I pass by the rectory along Chorro Street where I see the office window where I used to talk with him face-to-face as my confessor. Father Charlie helped to save my life from suicide because of teenage sexual traumas. Thank you Jesus for such a good father in Charles Moore.

Dear Father Charlie
It is with deep shock and sadness that I learn of your passing. I love you so much though we knew each other briefly. You saw me from the moment we met; actually, I suspect you saw yourself in me as well. I am especially saddened that I did not spend more time with you though the hours we shared together, just months before your passing, are etched in my mind and heart. Your boundless wisdom made the deepest impression on me. It was surpassed only by your endless love and compassion for all our fellow beings. I guess I will just have to continue our wonderful conversations now in spirit.

Father Charlie and Bea Littlemore are the two most influential people in my life, and I met Charlie in Bea's living room here in the UK. A magical and amazing evening never to be forgotten. On another of Charlie's visits to the UK I met him again in Glastonbury, in 1997 and have photos of the gathering at various locations, one special one, dancing 'King of the Fairies'
It is with great sadness that I read of his passing, but feel SO blessed to have known him and been transformed by him. I have a number of his Monteray sermons on tape which are priceless to me.
Carry on the good work Charlie. Love, Jude

Seminarian Charlie came into my life when I was only 15 years old at the Camp Santa Teresita Catholic summer camp where Charlie was our cabin counselor. He taught us some very important spiritual lessons, besides taking us on a hike high up to a mountain lake for fishing and swimming. When at 17 years old in 1964 I heard he was coming to the Mission San Luis Obispo, Ca on his first parish assignment, I jumped for joy to go to him to become my personal confessor at the rectory office. He became one of my most important life figures when I was going through some very hellish sexual teenage problems. Without his friendship and counsel I might have commit suicide. Later when he was chaplain at the Cal Poly Newman Center and housing, he was inspirational with outdoor guitar Masses with much more affection and love shown between attendees than at more conservative Catholic Masses. This is where Father Charlie's life really blossomed helping many people looking for more life and joy in their religion. Many years later, I was able to visit him again briefly in Monterey and also to hear some of his lectures at the Yoga Center in San Luis Obispo. He will always be loved by me as one of my dearest and nearest fathers of my life.

Dear Father Charlie,

It has taken me this long to overcome the shock and sadness of your death. In view of what an amazing soul you are, on your joyous journey, You always made me feel equal, comfortable, encouraged and uplifted while you were here on Earth.

The Pacific Grove gatherings in your home were wonderful, but too few. I cherish the times and memories. The series of talks you gave at Eleanor Wasson's home in Santa Cruz, were quite wonderful, and now Eleanor has passed on as well. When you see her, please tell her hello and many thanks for me.

I am so grateful that you graced my life with your presence and many gifts.

Namaste, Om Shanti

I met Father Charlie three times over the past
17 yrs. Twice he married 2 friends of mine and from that there was only one choice when it was my time. My wife and I married at Little Red Schoolhouse Bluff with Father Charlie producing a most magical, uplifting ceremony. Then I was exposed to a deeper level of his philosophy thru his radio talks. Truly impressive and well-read, it is up to us to carry the baton of his work. Bless you on your further journies, Father Charlie !!

To all who knew and love Fr. Charlie

I knew him during the '70's, when I was in high school, and after I went to Hartnell Jr. College. John and I came back in 1981 to be married by him.

By some miracle we were able to make it to the funeral on the 19th, since we were in the area for my mother's hospitalization. We only barely managed to find out about it.

We came back from the funeral feeling embraced by Fr. Charlie's love, and by those of the other people, and told Mom about the service. She died the next day. I like to think they are holding long conversations in heaven together.

Love and peace to all. Let your light shine.

Dear Father Charlie,

Though we never met, I was saddened to read of your passing from this lifetime last month, reflecting and thinking of what you would say, I realized that you are indeed still very much with us. I was utterly amazed by your contentious ideas and brilliant lifeforce when I discovered your ideas and listened to your discussions at beyondtheordinary.net (and subsequently read Synthesis Remembered: Awakening Original Innocence). Please know that your spiritual & philosophical influence has been cast wide across the face of the earth, and you continue to inspire. We have been blessed -- the world is a better place having known you.

Charlie and I often clashed, but when we did, the sparks created a new view of the universe. I saw him last at my work about a month ago and even then we sparkled in a kind of abrasion that bespeaks cohesion. Charlie and I loved each other as only combatants can. I think he caused me more grief than I caused him, but I relish in it. Goodbye, Charlie. An era ends with both of us.
