Scott Oostema Obituary

Scott Alan Oostema of Deming passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on Monday, March 10 after a lifetime struggle with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. He was born in Bellingham on April 14, 1986, and was a lifetime resident of Whatcom County. Scott was an avid collector of John Deere tractors and memorabilia. He enjoyed a full life on the farm. Although confined to a wheelchair, Scott greatly exceeded his limitations by going where no wheelchair has ever gone before (the river bar, barnyard, cow fields, logging sites, etc.). Summer fishing trips and travels across the country with his family were also highlights of his life. He also loved logging and hanging out with his dad, uncles, and many friends in the shop. He will be remembered most for his love of animals and the great outdoors. Scott will be deeply missed by his parents Roger and Lisa, his brother Michael, his grandparents Joyce Nielsen and John Stockman, Sidney and Leona Oostema, his aunts and uncles Glen and Lisa Oostema, Brad and Marlys Warner, Kirk and Karen Grafwallner, Gina Oostema, Robert and Lonnie Nielsen, David Nielsen, Teresa Nielsen, Darcie Nielsen, and numerous cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandfather Robert Nielsen and his uncle Marvin Oostema. A private burial for family and close friends will be held at 3:30 PM on Friday, March 14th at the Van Zandt Cemetery, followed by a Celebration of Life at 4:30 PM at the Deming Log Show Grounds. Donations in Scott's memory may be made to The Muscular Dystrophy Association, 701 Dexter Ave. N., Seattle, WA, 98109, or Make a Wish Foundation, 400 East Pine St., Suite 220, Seattle, WA, 98122. Any flowers may be sent to the family home at 4206 Caron Rd, Deming, WA, 98244 You may share your thoughts and memories of Scott with his family at www.molesfuneralhomes.com.

I remember Lisa's cousins Raymond and Nicky and what amazing boys they were. I only met Scott a few times but was always impressed with him. I know he had a wonderful life. My heart is with my Aunt Joyce and my cousin Lisa at this time.

Roger, Lisa & Family,
Today we spent time with you and your family, remembering a very special person named Scott. Scott was an inspiration to us and to everyone he was in touch with. Everytime that we go to the river for BBQ's and Scott is around, he is always smiling, joking and having a good time. That is what we are going to miss. Scott was and always will be a special man in our hearts forever!

Lisa, Roger and Michael
I was very sad to hear of Scott's passing. Although we have not spent much time together lately, I fell extremely lucky to have lived with you on the farm for as long as I did. I know Scott loved his life and where he lived. It brings me comfort knowing how content he was and how much he enjoyed all the experiences life offered him. My thoughts are with you today in celebration of his life.

Scott was a big handsome guy with that shock of dark hair and vivid blue eyes, extremely curious and quietly observant, wanting to know and understand, also stubborn and conservative with strong opinions. Despite being physically unable he was mentally able to diagnose a problem and fix a tractor from his wheelchair!
While his life was short there was a lot packed in it and we all have been blessed and humbled in our own ways by sharing our lives with with Scott. All my love, Aunt Darcie
