Virginia Flowers Obituary

Virginia Livingston Flowers 1925 ~ 2009 Virginia Livingston Flowers died Monday night (23 March 2009) as a result of the complications of age and the effects of a stroke suffered in 2001."Teach" was a friend to all and was loved by many for her cheery disposition and warm heart. She was able to reach out to bring others into her circle of friendship. She was born to William Rasmus Livingston and Afton Sears Livingston on 23 Oct 1925 in Murray, Utah. Her brothers William, Grant, Lewis and younger brother Wallace were very close to and supportive of their sister particularly after the early death of their father. Her brother Lewis is the only surviving member of her childhood family. Virginia served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the North Central States mission beginning in 1946 where she met her future husband Eugene V. Flowers of Salt Lake who was serving in the mission field at the same time. After returning home, they were married on Dec 2, 1948 in the Salt Lake Temple, they had been married for over 60 years at her death. They are the parents of two sons E. Kent Flowers and Mark L. Flowers (who died in infancy). Kent married Julia Clements in 1977 and they are the parents of her only grandchild Michelle C. Flowers. After her mission and marriage Virginia continued to serve in the church using her creative talents to write stories for the Church Primary Board, road shows for the ward, as part of her calling in the young women's' presidency and inspirational programs for many events. She also served as a teacher in the Relief Society. Her favorite calling and the one she is probably best known was her many years of teaching Sunday School classes to the youth. Alumni of her classes have served missions throughout the world, and are currently serving as Bishops, Stake Presidents, Mothers, Fathers, teachers, Relief Society Presidents, religious educators and faithful Latter-day Saints throughout the country. She taught the gospel throughout her life, when needed she used words. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the LDS chapel at 2065 East 4675 South in Holladay. Friends may call Friday, March 27 from 6 - 8 at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Drive. The family suggests memorial contributions in her name to the Church Humanitarian Services, the Red Cross, or the Kidney Foundation. Interment : Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.

Gene and Kent-
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Virginia, I was out of town, and I am so sad to have missed the services.
My love and prayers to you both. Virginia was a special lady to me. I will remember her quick wit and wonderful humor, together we could make each other laugh for hours! Virginia had a beautiful way of treating others, she was generous and kind, and her advice I always welcomed. Gene, thank you for sharing your darling Ginnie with me, I love you both. What a wonderful example of faith and service you and Virginia have been to me, and to so many others.
Much love - Pennie

Dear Gene,
Virginia was such an inspiration to me. She was the best legal secretary in Salt Lake City and I grew to know and love her very much when we officed next to each other in the old Capitol City Bank Building where the Matheson Courthouse now stands. I learned so much from her and have often felt sad that we lost touch with each other when you two began your adventure with The American Red Cross. I didn't know of her health struggles but I am certain she is at peace now. I prefer to remember her as the vivacious redhead who brightened many a dreary day for me. I know how much you loved her. I pray your sprirts will be lifted in your knowledge that you will be with her again.

Gene and Family,
So sorry to hear the news of Virginia. We love and admire you both so much. I always told people that you were the most in love couple I had ever seen. Wish my kids could have grown up knowing her as I did. Wish we could have been there Saturday, but know our hearts and prayers are with you. Love,

Dear Gene and Kent,
I was very sorry to hear of all the pain and suffering that Virginia has gone through over the last several years. I was not aware of her many additional menidcal problems, although I know she has had so many hard times. I am so sorry for your loss. It was 20 years agao on the 26th of this month that mom died and 4 years years ago on the 9th of this month that dad died and I still miss them both so very much!
My love, thoughts and prayers go out to you each and may God give the the strength and encouragement to get through each day, even when you feel the most void. She was very losved by all of us and I still think of the time Gene, when you came over when mom and dad were out of town and helped me with a furnace problem. I love all of you and will forever hold a special place in my heart for you (Gene) and your sweet wife. I love you, my friend and may God be with you now and forever!
Love Always, Dianne Cushing

We are saddened by the passing of your sweetheart, Virginia. Roger and I enjoyed knowing Virginia, and loved watching you lovingly serve your darling wife. We, along with Roger's Mother, Ardell Call, who shared the room with your wife, at Brighton Gardens, will greatly miss seeing both of you. We offer our sympathy and love, and may the Lord give you "peace of heart", knowing you will be reunited in the future. It was so wonderful reading about Virginia's life in her eulogy. What a great lady she was. Much love from Roger, Cheryl and Ardell Call

Guess the Christmas tree theme, Christmas Day dinner, laughter and fun, generous gifts, and family activities all come to mind when remembering Aunt Virginia. GeneAndVirginia were a single name and are still united. My heart goes out to Kent and family, and Gene. We will all miss her very much.
